Just sorting out a passat pd tdi 1999 that has done over 400,000miles..... stud that timing belt tensioner sits on sheared off and fooked it a month after we did belt! Stud has no recommended interval but after so many changes it had obviously weakened. SO be aware if buying any high mileage vehicles that if you are going to change the belt it might be worth spending that extra £0.76 for a new stud! But also be aware that stud will be very tight in the head. Just the thought for today!

Being a mechanic has it's advantages......... Drive a boring economical diesel and if you want a blast.....wait for customer to bring in Civic type R or Merc 500sl coupe. have a blast on road test using their fuel as long as your careful and then back in the diesel and come home!
Only last week saw 2 young Honda mechanics near where I live leave stealership in a customers Type R civic for a road test! Bet they weren't going to thrash it!!!

I need to be getting a diesel soon. My fuel bill is around £60-80 a week and the 70 mile a day round trip is wearing out bits far too fast on the car.

Just got to find a nice diesel low loader so I can carry the S2 around wherever I go. Or maybe a truck so I can go all 'knight rider' style

Thanks for all the info guys.

Today: all belts replaced, all fluids changed, all filters renewed and the EGR blanked off. She is running a bit better but I need to cehck the diesel timing and replace the MAF. Hopefully it can be tweaked to give a few more horses but just getting it back to stock performance would be great! The MAF is definately suspect although sometimes the engine wobbles a bit...like it is only firing on 3 cylinders. See if the MAF sorts it out or whether it is the start of a mystery search for the faulty part!

When our VW van had bubbles visible in the fuel lines it was a cracked pipe or part of some kind letting in the air.. Can't remember which bit it was though lol, sorry, I'll check it out. Symptoms were difficult to start, lumpy idle and down on power.

                          OK...update! LOL!

Did the full service, blocked the EGR AND replaced a split hose. Car is still lame and low on power and it wouldn't even go to 5000rpm in second gear on the flat! Wow. It is smoking like hell now so it is definately a fuelling issue.

While I am waiting for a MAF and boost control valve, I have a quick question:
How do I adjust/check the diesel timing after changing the cambelt?

Thanks in advance for any assistance. Seeing as many here run TDis and do their own maintenance, I thought it would be worth asking here before scouring the TDi discussion boards.

When I changed my timing belt, I marked all the pullys up and when I put the new belt on made sure all the marks re-aligned. The diesel pump pully has to be "held" in position in order for it to be in the correct location when I re-fitted the belt. I think you can get some software that is simialr to, or runs alongside vag-com to fine tune diesel timing, but I'm not sure if it applies to the 1z engine. In theory if the pump is set in the same position as when the belt was removed, it shouldn't need any adjustment.

I made sure that all the pulleys were marked and held during the belt change. I wasn't sure if this engine required some fine tuning of the injector phasing after a belt change. I had a search through VAG-COM but couldn't find out how to check the 'requested' versus 'actual' timing and where the adjustment would need to be done. Is it mechanical, does it apply to my engine? Thanks, Lee.

Lee - when Mihnea checked my fault codes - I think it had a timing error (as well as the injector) - or maybe the fault related to that. What codes are you getting?

I have seen, for newer TDIs, you plot the results of a vag-com log into a spreadsheet and it tells you if the timing is needing adjusted. I am sure it is on the ross-tech page.
