Read what the EGR does and when you figure that out you'll put that ball bearing right back in

It's anti-mechanical, that POS was only meant for emissions that don't get checked for MOT, so don't bother, I'd actually even suggest taking the EGR valve out and putting an aluminium plate on the manifold.

Cheers for the info guys. I will find out the PN of the MAF.

Thats what i would do too

EGR= exhaust gas recirc. It dumps exhaust gas into the inlet on overrun to reduce the harmful emmisions.

not only on overrun but also at idle/part throttle. it's ECU controlled so I know how it works and also how to de-activate it from the ECU

So you just put a plate in between the valve and the exhaust gas pipe? And block the vaccum hose - I'll check if the valve holds pressure with mityvac.

I don't have a clue where the oil is coming from! If I am getting black smoke out the back, maybe the valve is broken and it is unburnt diesel getting sprayed out?

The vacuum hose (blue arrow) doesn't go anywhere - it is blocked - maybe it has been used in the past to connect a boost gauge?

To block that pipe (red arrow), use some copper plate, dont use aluminium cuz it is goint go burn out. You can use also another material, but i dont know is it named in English. >Medenina< in Slovene... I think there is no need to block the vacuum hose (we are talking about the yellow thin plastic hose, right?)

I'll try a sheet of steel in between to block it.

Yes - the yellow hose - I was going to block that in case the valve was leaking - but I can test that.

Try blocking the pipe and report if you have less smoke and more power. i hope this wil do the trick!

and btw. when you unscrew the pipe you can take a look "inside" the valve, you will see if it is open or not. mine was pretty open.

Just off out to get a load of new belts, oils and filters.

PN on the MAF is 074 906 461 and it looks like a hot film one.

Chassis number is WAUZZZ8CZSA022009 and I would much appreciate a discounted price for the MAF by PM or to lee@s2-parts.com

Thanks for all your help guys. I will be planning to isolate that PoS EGR thingy and after a service I will do some logs.

Doug, my MAF looks very different to yours plus I was also getting that oil spray under the bonnet. THe engine has had the 'Gunk' treatment as the whole lot was black...no kidding! Hopefully a leak can be pinpointed if there is one.

I blanked the EGR off, and while I was there I noticed a 1" split in the short section of rubber hose(red arrow shows where) - so both of those fixed and it runs a lot better - no noticeable black smoke and it feels smoother adn more powerful!

                        Thanks for the help.

I just looked on ETKA according to your chassis number eng. code is 1Z. The part number for the MAF is 074 906 461 with a Retail of 156.37+vat.

Try GSF for this, they do some really cheap MAFs.

Stick an X on the end of the number and it comes down to £75.10+VAT to the man on the street. Less a big stack of Forum friendly discount. I'll check it out tomorrow and come up with a price.

I just looked over the vagcomponents website. he's charging more than retail prices for most of those MAF's.
