Thanks mate. Today i removed the gearbox from thé car. Have to lower the subframe also for better Access to sides of engine bay. Its never ending Story ??
I have Stock 7a 5spd gearbox. What are options fór mě in terms of gearbox which could hold more power? Some TDI 6q dqt? From 2.5 5 cyl? Straight fit or prop shaft has to be shortened ?Is there Amy option without a lot of mods?
What's your idea of not a lot of modifications? I think no 6spd swap will be 'easy' but certainly a couple of different options out there for you depending on availability of parts.
My first thought is matching a 6 speed gearbox to your current rear differential (what ratio?) and working around that problem.
The rear diff has 4.11, the same as the gearbox. The idea of the gearbox is, to slowly gather the parts, as it won't be cheap an easy to find. DQT gearbox will be here the easiest option to source. But I don't know what to source except the gearbox. Linkage? Driveshafts? Shortening the prop shaft? Gearbox mounts?
Just some quick info off the top of my head, I haven't done any research on the DQT box. But I am doing a 6spd conversion with DSY.
You will probably require a minimum of:
Matching center driveshaft from A6 (it should be shorter, B5 S4 will work)
Convert front driveshaft gearbox outputs to 100mm
Shifter linkages to match DQT maybe all from A6 (B5 S4 should work)
VSS may need some attention or changing
Possibly change in gearbox mating fasteners
I hope the stock 5spd gearbox will last at least a year or two with some decent driving (no hard launches). I think I need a pause after I will finish the engine.
Thanks. I want to have the car ready this year and maybe enjoy it before the winter. If I can't make it, then no problem. Once the engine bay will be painted. then it will look much better and give me some strength to do other work.
When i saw thé gearbox yesterday i told myself that i have to clean it, as i dont want to put inside dirty gearbox even if the gearbox wont last long. It takes some time but i am overall happy with thé result.
I painted the engine bay with primer. Now whole engine bay has to be sanded with some fine sandpaper and then i could paint it with base coat and clear coat.
I was talking with a guy which works in paint shop and he recommend to use paper around 1000grit under water. IT will stick nicely. No problem with this. I was worried as well but then i saw other people to make it thé same.
The engine bay is freshly painted. Looks amazing. After 34 years, there were dents, scratches, rust, and now nicely clean. Next week I will start slowly reassembly the engine paint. Have to look at the old pictures to see where the parts goes
Can't wait when this boy comes into the engine bay, but I am sure it won't be so easy to get everything back as quickly as possible. A lot of fabrication and wiring has to be done.
