God I love the S2 forum!

Cheers RE2500 - 'tis funny, was trying to decide whether to get stuck into rebuilding the KR or just go for a new engine, you've made up my mind for me!

Will keep you all updated on progress - looks like an opportunity to really clean up the engine bay, and the A4 (with its new Stage 3 clutch ) will have to be demoted to dagdag for now... (sorry Rob!)

Loved my MK2 and miss it like mad. Love the colour of yours. I had spax RSX coilovers and full poly bush set up on mine and it as amazing in the corners even with the VR2.9 in the front
Just some finishing touches to do now

Got to say it - contraversial and all - I was never a big fan of Golfs, but they went downhill IMO after the Mk2. That one of hiltoa's looks really quite cool - its so refreshing to see one in decent condition and without the bolted on tacky garb that a lot of owners are so keen on.

For FWD fun I guess there's not much to match a nice Mk2 without spending silly money. They do handle well - a mate of mine used to road-rally one and it was fab on a set of Bilsteins.

Even more contraversial - 205 GTi handled much better and was much better looking

I respect your opinion but you're wrong

the germans can't build good hatch chassis, just like the french can't build cars that last

                        @ re2500 - Cheers! I know it makes sense...

@ Lee - I'll look out for you, but a bit worried about you driving past my house every night, as I live in a cul-de-sac!

@ Error404 - The Germans CAN build a 'good' hatch chassis - The Corrado and (stretching the 'hatch' definition a bit) the Porsche 968 being cases in point. The Pug is a 'fun' handling car, but potentially dangerous with shocking lift off oversteer in the wet, as Jamo quite correctly put it. I learnt to drive in a 205, and then spent my formative years in various Golfs and Jettas - I had plenty of tank-slappers in the 'Dubs that would have had me ejected backwards off the road in the 205...

So... In my humble opinion & experience, Jamo is right, and you are just baiting us young sir!

haha maybe you're right about the baiting,

Lift off oversteer is not dangerous if you are anticipating it, which anyone ragging a stiff hatch should be - otherwise all RWD cars capable of power oversteer would be dangerous in the wet too by that token! If the golf's chassis was as stiff it would be just as susceptible, but its not, so there

Anyway, I know which i'd own these days now i've grown up (a bit! )

Glad the valver is getting treated to a cheeky upgrade - is the 6a going straight in or getting any treatment first?

Ah, someone else parked it there... You caught me being lazy and getting a wheel bearing done at 5 Lanes Garage, which is just round the corner from me. That was the day the Golf blew up while acting as stand in...

It's all about the definition of 'good' handling I guess - all RWD cars capable of power oversteer ARE dangerous, (and therefore fun when you're on it) in the wet.

Don't get me wrong, 205 GTis are a good laff and look fantastic when not chavved, but I prefer the solidity and durability of a Golf (blown engine not withstanding! ) - a comparison of whether cars of their age handle well or not is a bit pointless given any enthusiastic owner will have adjusted the handling to their own taste by now, and a fairly basic Ford Focus would out-handle both, with it's new fangled 'Control Blade' rear end... There - hook, line and sinker!

As for the 6a - I'm hoping to take my time over the job, tidy the engine bay, maybe tuck a few wires, and degrease / paint the block. The only internal stuff I'm going to do for now is slip the KR cams in - I'll get the engine in and running well before spending any more money on tuning... (The A4 is still waiting for a turbo upgrade, poor thing!)
