Audi 80 V6 quattro (new daily driver)

Did a bit of shopping today... No pics yet, but its a new mule for daily duties that will let me get the S2 into my garage for much long overdue TLC.

Its an MY92 80 quattro sedan - V6 engine - quite a rare beast in its own right. I couldn't bring myself to buy just any old cheap runabout - Audi is the only thing I know and I needed something trusty and robust enough with 4 doors with some sort of character about it. I missed it 1st time round, but the current owner (gunman) kindly let me know the car was up for sale and gave me 1st dibs. He had made a nice job on refurbing the alloys, replacing both lambda probes and a problematic hall effect sensor.

It has a few niggles as you'd expect of any old car, but it only has 118k miles. Paint is great (bar a few spots of note) - pretty sure she is Tornado Red, but not checked yet. Everything works except the central locking and the water temp gauge (known faulty sensor). The ECU singularly fails to talk to anything which is a bit annoying, but that'll just be a wiring fault.

It has the sport suspension, so drives rather well - softer sprung than an S2 of coure, but its nice to have dampers that work. Brakes a bit soft (prolly old fluid or tired servo)... And there is knock at rear left corner - likely ARB link. Rear discs & pads need changed.

There is hesitation from low revs at high load sometimes - probably MAF or injector related but it's OK to drive... Will get that sorted once the ECU starts talking.

Tax & MOT runs to September so it buys me some time and puts less stress and strain on the old S2.

Makes a rather nice burble - unexpected really - it can be legally decatted as well which I'll get round too.

I doubt its making full stock power at 180bhp - so the performance is far from S2 levels - however it seems a fine, solid and original car and I hope it serves me well.

      Paul,

I'm envious, but pleased you now also have a V6, should pick up more info about these, from watching how you get on.

My v6 Cabrio also has a dead temp gauge, am going to change the MFTS, hopefully it also improves the mpg.

Well done, I miss the quattro drive-train on the Cabrio, even if it is "only" a 2.6 auto.

Must be getting older as the auto is handy around town.

Gav will be well pleased with his. He should post up a photo of all of the car with those black wheels.

Similar wheels / colour would look ace on your car Paul ?

      Kind regards.

        Hey paul

good to hear you got that, I was looking at one on autotrader to do a s2 saloon but after picking up a new car on friday i've decided to concentrate on that for the time being, one thing I do have lying around if interested is we cut the engine mounting brackets out a 20v on thursday before the car went. I've decided i've just got too much on currently to have more than 3 projects to deal with so the s2 saloon one had to go shame really as I have nearly everything to do it minus the block.

Nice buy Paul, now you will have even less time to work on the S2

Hi Paul, Nice to finally meet you and I hope you get more use from her than I did. Kinda sorry to see her go but glad she'll be in the hands of someone who can sort out the wee niggles.

Here's a pic of the car when Ihad it:

Wow - a serendipitious post for 10,000 - LOL - hadn't noticed that until you lads did.

I'm sure the car has had paint at some point - but it was a nice job. Think someone later attaked the mirrors and boot spoiler with a rattle can though.

Found something else today that doesn't work - foglights front & rear... Quick look saw the relay missing - if all the niggles are that easy I will be laughin.

Had a good crawl round under it today and it seems basically sound - bit crusty and surface rusty on the running gear but all as youd expect. Rear brakes deffo need done 1st. Bushes are all surprisingly good considering.

Also just noticed that someone attacked the airbox with a hefty size drill in the past. Bit coorse but I think this machine could benefit from some sensible tweaks and upgrades - not doing that until the S2 is properly ship shape though then I'll decide on long term future of the V6Q.

Someone PM'd me to ask how I was getting on with the V6Q. I have been busy thru the nice long evenings getting to know this machine a lil bit better... Snapped a few pics along the way - covered here for posterity.

As a reminder - the purpose of this car is to provide daily duties while my S2 gets some much needed TLC - but I wanted to give this the once over and get a prioritised job sheet in order. If the car stays liked, doesn't let me down and remain somewhat 'fun' then I'll get round to sprucing it up a bit... Tis a rare car in its own right and is deserving of a good home somewhere.

First up - what the engine looks like in current condition. Its a bit sweaty - common for the V6 I'm told - and someone has cracked/bodged engine & belt covers along the way.

This generation of the V6 engine has a variable intake valve configuration - very clever - but someone disconnected the air pipe into it - and blanked off the control ports. D'oh...

The way its designed to work is provide a long intake tract below 4000rpm for best torque - and short intake tract above that for max power... Strangely enough the car feels a bit gutless above 4000rpm but I think there are several reasons for that.

Apparently this engine was the first produced by Audi to go with direct ignition ==> no distributor. Being a 6 cyl they use a wasted spark system with a three channel ignition system on the ECU and three coils with twin outputs.

Firing order is kinda funky on a V6 and there is a pleasing burble from the old girl.

Getting back to oil leaks - these pics show the mess underneath - my feeling is its one or two slow leaks that have been ignored a long time - with the build up of grime and it all being blown underneath the car its impossible to see the source yet.

The undertray was caked heavily in old grime - its still soaking in degreaser outside as I type this.

I had to have a look under the dash as well for some reason - and discovered that an alarm had obviously been installed at some point - then removed. The work looks untidy but seems safe enough as the new joints are soldered and taped. Will have to get round to that someday.

Some other weird wires at rear of cluster need investigation too.

Now some really weird stuff... Clearly someone has gone mad with a drill on the airbox at some point - trying to make it flow more air in. Pity they hadn't first seen to the fact this car has a hot air intake system.

The flap you see in the airbox is thermally controlled - in ambient air it draws in air heated above the exhaust manifold... as air temp rises higher the flap closes that door and draws in air from behind the headlight. I tested the flap with a hot air gun and freezer spray - it works - but its crap design IMHO. I will have to sort that.

Anyway - the extra airbox holes just help the engine draw in yet more hot air from this area in the engine room.
