Good to see a car sorted after some amateurs have messed with it.

Passed the 500km mark, and started to give it some go.
Still perfect oilpressures, runs and sound good, and no leaks.
Only this one thing that worried me, but maybe it's just because I start listening to every possible noise

Idle is perfect, on the revs also, but when I keep it around 1200-1300rpm I can hear a very light rattle from the engine. Seems like it's from the intake manifold or so. Also mostly to be heard when it's falling back in rpm and is almost at idle, and a very little bit when holding it steady at +-1200rpm. But you really need to put your head above the camcover, ... so I might just be getting mad
I'd describe the noise as it has had a solid tappet conversion, and you get a little valvetrain noise for 2 seconds while the engine is slowing down.

My mechanic thought about the camchain since it has no tensioner, and the noise comes in when the rpm is decellerating. It really is only ever so slighty at those rpm's from 1000-1200rpm, and at the other rpm's it sounds perfect. He assured me that it isn't the noise of a bearing or piston pen, so that's good then
I've ordered some Silkolene 10W50 instead of the 5W40 that's in there now to run it in... maybe that cures it!

              Aventus,

              Great thread.

              Great collection trip.

              Great photos.

Even though you had a "slight problem" with the engine which forced your hand, it now means that it is very healthy.

The rest of the car seems to be pretty good. At the end of the spending of the money you'll end up with a very nice RS2.

Thanks for sharing the whole thing, just what this forum craves.

Can I ask you after re-making the engine, can you notice if it pulls a little bit better than it used to be or is the difference not big enough to be noticeable just by driving it?

You might consider mentioning to the previous owners a note about the condition of the engine and under bonnet area so that they might be aware of the situation and think the same as you do about the garage in question. Having said that their web site does not lead you to think they would be able for an older car such as an RS2, although some of the issues mentioned seem pretty basic.

              Best wishes and kind regards.

Thanks! With the things done to it now, it surely feels like a very solid RS2, and I hope to enjoy it for quite a long time!
I noticed the previous owner, and he was shocked since he obviously had left a big pile of money at T&F motors.

Considering the performance... it might be all in the head, but it feels more supple than before, and more willing at higher revs. The much lighter H-beam rods in for it?
And night I had a little test with a friend of mine:

My RS2 vs his E39 M5 with custom exhaust. From about 50 to 180km/h, and we were dead even. Not too bad for such an old estate car

Oh and nobody that recognizes the ever so slight rattle above idle I'm talking about 2 posts ago?

And for so far I've read, the 10W50 from Silkolene/Titan should be the ultimate oil for a chipped RS2?

Enjoy it for ages, but don't retire from your job just yet, start saving for the next item that requires your attention, but it will be worth it.

Certainly will, there's RS in front of it's name, so I'm prepared
Considering the rattle, which could very well be the camchain.

When the head was off I felt play like there is to be seen on this video:

considering that on that audi V8 this is supposed to be new:

maybe smart to change the chain??

If yours is such a backlash as the first video that I would change to a new chain. Efficient is rigidly as in this second video.

Already ordered one this evening, don't want to be taking any risk, and my mechanic agreed to change it to avoid any problems... you never know! 218.000km isn't a little bit on that chain. And with a price of a good 50€ it's one of the cheaper ones, so I better enjoy it

50E is actually a lot. I paid the 2.0 16V to be the best that could have been to get around 20E.
But what you do, as it rattles you do not change, probably with the change.

Update on the rattle.... it didn't go away with a new camchain.
Today we tried sourcing the noise with a stethoscope, but really hard to locate the sound.

I'll try to describe it again, as good I can.

                                - It is a rather mechanic rattle/knocking noise
                                - after coldstart you can't hear it. Runs perfect, oilpressure ok, no weird noises
                                - when warming up, after a couple of minutes you can start to hear the noise when:
                                - the revs go down after blipping the throttle to 2000rpm or so.
                                - when you go above 2000rpm really nothing weird is to be heard

When the engine is really warmed up, you can keep it around 1300rpm or so, and have a constant knocking. It isn't LOUD, but certainly noticable. On the acceleration of the revs again nothing strange is to be heard.

With the stethoscope put just above the oilsump against the block around cilinder 3 you can hear it the best IMO. But o so strange that it goes away with higher revs... When driving and keeping it at 4000rpm or so, it doesn't make ANY strange noises.
And it goes like a beast up to the redline.

My mechanic is afraid that taking of the sump again won't reveal antything, because it isn't that loud yet.

Any ideas what could have gone wrong during the rebuild?
An oilpump would be rather giving a knocking noise on accelerating revs, not at falling down, right?

The idea of driving it a bit further to see if it gets worse crossed our minds, but that might also be a dangerous game...! You don't notice anything of it during driving since the higher rpm-band is problem and noise free.

                                appreciate your ideas!
