Little update on the RS2, after completely dismantling and rebuidling the engine following the engine problem I posted in this tread:

In short, I bought the car with a revised engine (done one year ago), but it turned out that they had put the Sputter connecting rod bearing in the wrong way. So my engine started knocking 18.000km after the overhaul, about 2 months ago. For more info read the topic

I'll post some pictures I took while taking out the engine. I had the luck to be able to take out the engine, and help (but mostly look and learn!) dismantling/rebuilding the engine together with my mechanic, who has a nice bit of experience with VAG engines.

            Out it went

              honed cylinders

piston ring gap when the pistons came out was 0.80mm. 0.35 is supposed to be new, 1.00 the wear limit. Bores were measured, and with 81.04 as the maximum noted we decided to buy new pistons rings. Gap with new rings was 0.40... perfect!

              Cleaned the engine ofcourse

went for some fancy H-beam rods with ARP2000 bolts

crankshaft on first oversize (had damage)

head with new guides and stems, and nicely decoaked

                on it went

all sorts of new clamps and some hoses for the CV traject (was sweating)

luckily the 2mass flywheel was still very good, but a new clutch went on

                    the time had come!

VERY very handy manual from Paul, big thanks for making such info available... top work!

Also had put a new righthand engine mount in since they are quite a pita to replace. They told my mechanic it's supposed to be the last one availabe, so lucky me

and ofcourse new cambelt, other belts, and plugs.

And back on the road since friday!

I've been running it in for 400km since then, and so far no leaks, runs great, oilpressure perfect at all time, no smoke, ... hope it stays that way

So the company that did the overhaul one year ago had:

put the bearings in the wrong way, put the cambelt on point instead of one left, didn't replace manifold gaskets although the one from the exhaust was leaking slightly, left multiple hoses unconnected (still a mistery one water hose hadn't popped of), aircon had 1.3kg on it instead of 750g, big cablingpack on front of the engine was hanging loose, and so on, and so on...

But as I have said in my other topic. Mistakes are made every day, but it's the way they are dealed with that seperates you from the rest.

But unfortunately they didn't want to help in any way, were very rude and late in their answers, and weren't even coming close to appologizing.

therefore I no longer will reserve their name. Since it's a company in the UK, be sure to stay away from them by all means!

                          T&F motors, a real shame

Excellent progress! Great pictures too! I will be using a couple for reference later. Sorry about your misfortune with previous rebuilders, but glad to see you got her back on the road. How much time did it take from start to finish?

If you are in need for any specific pictures/questions, I've taken lots more so I might be able to help. Closely following your great topic btw!

Timewise it was an afterhours job. The engine went out about 5 weeks ago, and since then the last thing I did was push my mechanic or the revision company that got my cylinderhead and crankshaft. It needed to be done properly, but about one month between out and back in+running isn't too bad in my eyes.

All thats left now is cleaning up some parts like the intake manifold and a heatshield that is a bit rusty. Just to keep myself busy
