  • For about 2 days, felt productive cuz things were actually coming together 20260228_083105.jpg 20260228_083123.jpg but as a result of that, i removed everything from the bay....again.... hopefully the last time before i prep for paint???

20260228_142810.jpg I will merge the abs, lighting and ac harness into one grommet. That means i have 11(!) Holes to weld up on the firewall part of me thinks it will be significantly easier to just cut a large piece out???

Also decided to clean up and install bits i had kicking around. One of which was the oil filter. Took a look thru the old one (date code 2021!). Looks like they put gravel in there?!?! Wtf... NOT sparkly though.

Gonna try and actually relax this weekend now and then get stuck into welding up the firewall...ie i am procrastinating cuz that job is going to suuuuuuuck

    • Well, relaxing is boring i guess. Got a coupla hours in this afternoon. Uneeded holes in the firewall filled and got the new one needed drilled and i got the ps lines all secured.

This week i concentrate on figuring out ac and make a final list of all the electrical connecters i need.

      • So, first attempt at brazing aluminum tobes together failed. I think it's the rods i got from crappy tire.... they said they had flux but i don't think it was enough. Got some better material on the way and flux so hopefully it flows better.

Once i figure out how to do that properly i should be able to put it together. It's gonna take a few days to get the material so now it's the happy task of listing all the electrical connectors i need....

        • Took the day off to get a buncha stuff done, one of which was to go to the scrap yard as by chance they had a coupla touaregs in there that could donate their intake manifold to my racecar. While there, i took the opportunity to snag a bunch of connectors but more importantly, a pile of AC line ends and connections that i can use IF, by the end of the weekend, i have figured out the whole tube brazing thing. Still waiting for good ol amazon to show up though with the materials.

The hope for the weekend is figure out how to braze the aluminum tubing, finish one more brake line and run the last of the fuel lines and then i THINK it's all electrical.

          • New skill unlocked..... i is a bit uglier but it was the first one that worked sooooo.

            20260307_102631.jpg

I got a leak free joint after about 20 attempts..... upon success, i decided to proceed directly to level 20 and see if i could braze it to a fitting. Success.

            20260307_103723.jpg

So, AC is now feasible. I am gonna set it aside for a minute tho as i need to do more measuring and getting more appropriate materials. I need metric drill bits as imperial produces too much slop (tubing supposed to slip in each other but tolerances were off... stupid chinesium) and i think i wanna use propane as map burns too hot and easily melts the aluminum if not careful.

            • That corner got crowded.....

              20260307_181303.jpg

Ran out of tube to splice the high pressure side but i have a plan to get from the evaporator to condenser and added a service port. Gonna put the 2 pressure sensor on the section that runs under the headlight to the condensor. I need to clean up the saddle i cut off the tube for the low side service port, then i'll get that on to the original low side pipe.

It'll take time to sort and i need to get more consistent with my joints (3 outta 4 went perfect) but for the first time since i got the v8, i can say definitively that AC will happen which makes me (and my wife lol) happy.

              • Express delivery from china. 3 variants of my upper rad connection. Kinda wanna redesign the lower one now.

                • I THINK i have everything i need from a mechanical perspective except the tone ring for the speedometer (waiting 4 months now!) so attempting a "final" dry build. Going to get it all together and then do the final electrical work (connectors flying in from all over the world for that) and i can MAYBE try n fire it. It'll be a coupla weeks yet but possibly on the home stretch.

                  • Where did you order the tone ring from?

i was thinking about doing a v8 but i think ill go with something else

I'm not on youtube so i guess i'm not worthy.

                            • I went thru craftcloud

I feel i may be too optimistic when i say it, but the heavy fab is finished? I gotta do a buncha **** for battery connections and ac lines but other than that.....just electrons....

                              • Got up early today and got going.... the drivetrain is bolted in now. mechanically at this point the only things left are the front axles and a leaky coolant pipe (steel so caveman me can fix it lol). I don't need to get under it again now except for exhaust.

I filled the hydraulics and i have a good brake pedal but i have doubts about the clutch, it doesn't spring back all the way and i don't think it's an air issue. Perhaps the decade this car sat in a field didn't do the clutch master any favours. I probably have enough to get things working on the stands though.

The ps plumbing is gonna need a rethink if i want to get the ac drier mounted on the frame rail rail. As well, the lines need a heatshield as they get awfully close to the exhaust manifold.

                                20260314_104946.jpg

                                gettin somewhere though.

EDIT: which clutch master do i want? 893721401D or 8A0721401? are they the same piston size? part of me is wondering if the issue is an incompatibility between master from an 01A and slave from an 02X?
