The rocker cover got a polish.
New gasket with a little hylomar spray.
And fitted.
I've left out the plastic shield which has already lost a corner. I will just have to remember not to open the oil cap with the engine running.

Back at it after a couple of days doing other things.
New thermostat.
New idler pulley
New alloy fitting for the rear of the block.
Water rail got a clean.
The sensor is broken.
It was tight.
But I happened to have a new spare.
Fitted with new bolts.
A little discovery. My upper timing belt cover was cracked. I also found one of the cover clips bent. I found that someone has replaced the tension guide for the pas pump on the wrong side of the support bracket. Then they just forced everything back together.
How it should be.
How it was
The intake got a good scrub.
New gasket.
Fitted

The exhaust manifold got a clean.
And treated with some rust converter.
It works really well on cast iron.
New gasket.
New lock nuts. Two new studs to replace ropey ones. All studs coated in copper grease.
I removed the engine mount to give more access.
But still needed my special spanner for the three awkward ones.
All done.

The gearbox needs a good clean.
The inside of the bell housing is full of oily crud. It get a good scrub.
As does the outside.
That's much better.
After drying the metal parts get sprayed with wd40.
I have a new seal. Any tips for removing the old one? I can't remember how it did the last one. It's quite tight.

If you can't get at with a lip seal removal tool (posh name for a bent screwdriver) I've had success drilling tiny pilot holes holes into the thickest part of the seal each side and threading a self tapping screw into them so I can pull them out with pliers. However this is a last resort option and not ideal with seals in alloy castings as the risk of doing damage is too high...
So I'd find a smallish/medium size flat blade screwdriver you're not too attached to, sharpen the end so it's butter knife sharp, bend the tip over 90 degree's about 4/5 mm from the end and attack it with that. Once you get it moving it should come out easily.

That's a result, good thinking Dave, looks like you do a bit of sea fishing.
Forgot to say I really like finish you got on the EM using rust converter, wonder what happens once it get's hot, hopefully not too much.
And I have to ask as I'm a nosy sod... Are you planning on leaving the old girl stock or putting something like an MTM 360bhp chip set in?
The stock mapping really doesn't take advantage of what a K24 7200 can do, more at the bottom end than anything, after your Nothelle it's going to feel very laggy indeed.
Oh yeah, I have one of those 12mm spanners, how they expect you to get torque wrench on them is beyond me.

Cool! An MTM chip set would be a major bonus, they're normally for a 360BHP set up, anymore and they used a K26/7 as on my car.
You can soon tell if they're genuine MTM chips as they use scrambler boards in between the the chip and ECU socket and the handwriting on them is very distinctive.
I like my fishing as well, though I'm more of a river/brook Trout man on a fly or tiny spinner, I do have sea fishing kit, though it's my fathers from the 1970's.

I'm yet to open up the ecu for a look.
Same here for the fishing. Like my small river trout and sewin fishing plus salmon occasionally.
Unfortunately, most of the rivers around me have been polluted by intensive dairy farms

New bearing
Fitted and torqued up with a little thread lock.
I purchased a new Sachs slave from a local parts supplier. The original has been superseded by a new part number.
I was a bit worried as it looks different to the original. The bleed outlet is now directly above the inlet.
It doesn't fit.
It fouls the top of the gear change mount. Very annoying. The original Sachs appears nla. I should have bought a few back in the summer when Autodoc were selling them for £40 each. Doh. I do have a new Meyle one which I can fit for now but I will keep an eye out for a new old stock Sachs.
Anyway, over to draining the oil. Looks old.
