Thanks. Taking it slow at the moment.
Anyway, got a few hours in the garage today.
One of the water rail bolts rounded out so I had to hammer in a torx.


Set the engine to tdc. Got the big boys toys out for the crank bolt.


Then split the gearbox/engine.


What have we here?
Sporty clutch.


Then got the engine on the stand.


I will tidy the garage tomorrow.

Anyway, got most of the engine stripped today.

Spot the first discovery!



Any RS2 experts out there. These look out to me?


But quite clean inside and no wear on the camshaft lobes.



Head off.

You can see some unusual marks on the inlet valve on no4 cylinder. I think I'm going to find it's damaged on the seat.



Something has been bouncing around in No 4.






Sump is a bit mucky but I've seen worse.
Pistons out tomorrow.
I can see some damage to the crown of piston 4. All will be revealed tomorrow.

Well spotted. I was wondering why anyone would do that? I was rather concerned when i discovered that. I'm wondering what other horrors i might find.

That's interesting with the cam caps. Did you find any unusual wear in caps 7 and 8?

Hows the cylinder head? Does it have the usual cracks between the valve seat and sparkplug?

Might be the same mechanic who fiddled with my S2 head then as in my thread someone spotted the same issue years ago

No. Nothing I can see by eye.
Anyway, pistons out this morning.
First I cleaned up the cylinder head around the valves. No 5 has a helicoil insert and some marks/ damage. No cracks visible.



The pistons don't look too bad apart from No 4.





The shells are showing wear.


And some wear on No 5 crank journal.


Bores are not too bad.





My mechanic friend is calling in with his micrometers after work hopefully so we can measure up.

Not sure but I didnt see the block/gearbox spacer so I assume it has a single mass flywheel? Also is that a weld repair to the cylinder head near the spark plug on the last pic of cylinder head?

I agree, looks like a weld repair. And not really a good one either. Could be wrong though.
