Yep, MK2 16V 256mm brakes are indeed a straight fit, 8V ones are no use as the caliper carrier is part of the wheel bearing housing, they should stop something that light pretty well and fit under 14" rims leaving plenty of scope for OE wheel options, some BBS RA's would suit it well IMO.

The rear drums will be fine once serviced and properly adjusted, they do work well, I wasted a load of time converting one of my Scirroco's to rear discs and wished I left it alone, way too much hassle for a very small improvement.

Today was dry and quite mild so I made a start cleaning the underside.

I used the multi tool with a flat blade to remove the underseal.

And then attacked it with a wire re wheel.

As you can see I found a hole and will need to weld in a patch. It took 2 hours to do one wheel arch.
This is going to take a while.

MK2/3 golf caliper carriers are a different bolt spacing to the MK1 hub carriers.

I used a 3rd party adapter to mount MK3 GTi calipers/carriers and G60 discs on my Scirocco. I ended up mounting a MK4 golf servo and master cylinder to the drivers side of the bulk head too as the MK1 setup with the linkage and the servo being mounted on the passenger side must have too much give as the brakes were never any good until the MK4 servo "mod" .

I have just stole..... Borrowed this from a MK1 forum.

It looks like you can use some calipers that you may have to hand, then you just need a MK2 GTi disc(s)...

Mk1 -> 256mm Brakes The correct caliper and carriers need to convert your Mk1 to 256mm brakes can be found on :

          Audi 80 quattro (83 to 85)
          Audi 90 5-cylinder (85 to 87)
          Audi Coupe 5-cylinder (85 to 88
Scirocco 16V (if you can find one !!)

Note:- Pads and Discs from the same vehicles will also be needed. >88 Mk2 16v discs and pads are also compatible with the conversion despite the calipers and carriers not being so.

The specific part numbers for this caliper carriers (if bought new from VAG are):-

          Part Numbers:-
          Caliper carriers - 853 615 125 (x2)
          Carrier bolts - N900 689 02 (x4)
          Sliding pin bolts - 321 615 141 (x4)

          Jase.

Nice. Thanks for the info. Annoying that I scrapped a five pot coupe a couple of years ago with the right brakes

              That's really good info Jase!

I was thinking about this yesterday and ended up texting Dave some misinformation which thankfully you've corrected, the diagrams Google gave me suggested that MK2 16V carriers would work. Sorry Dave, at least you've got a few more options now though with the B2 and very early B3 carriers which shouldn't be too hard to find.

Pity you scrapped some but at least you've got a pair of Girling 54's and just need carriers as even these calipers are expensive now, I cringe when I think of the parts I've weighed in over the years hence being such a hoarder now.

Nice use of a multi tool on the underseal BTW, noted for future use. I've got two of them and the only time I've used one on a car was to cut out the hole for the battery box in the floor of my S2 as I didn't want sparks flying about inside.

I invested in a good work light. Now I can see what I'm doing.

I'm taking my time. The slightest crack in the underseal looks ok until you dig.

Thanks for the offer Sal but I found that Epytec do them for a good price and i have a set on order. Not much progress to report. I had a nasty cold for a few days which put me out of action. I have flipped the car up the other way so i can reach the bits out of view and i still have a few days wire brushing to go. The caddy underside has an incredible number of nooks and crannies

Looking forward to seeing this progress. Not gonna lie, the difficulties and costs for the route i'm on make me long for a simple mk2 vr6!

                                The work goes on ……………….!

This is the worst area of rust and will need some welding.

I made an extension to help with the nooks and crannies
