The rear drums need attention.

They are dated 1989 so the originals. They are well within the wear limit.


And cleaned up nicely.


After some Bilt hydrate 80 they got two coats of epoxy.


I'm not looking forward to putting the shoes together. I have new shoes and springs ready to fit.

The drums got some satin black.

And new wheel bearings.



The old ones have made in England on them. Interesting.

The rear brakes have been assembled. Getting those springs on is a bit of a mare!




Then the new bearings got some grease.


And the drums fitted.

She is back on her feet

Then I proceeded with the scary process of getting her on the ground. Lowering each corner slowly as I go.


All done. Phew.
Then to get her into the workshop. I have no brakes at all so used a solid tow bar at the front to the front of the tractor and pulled her out of the barn and pushed her into the workshop.


One box of dodo mat did the complete cab.



Next job I think (while the weather is good) is to sand down the body to bare metal and get some epoxy on her.

It did indeed take a while. About three days!
Anyway, its done now.

Then a good friend popped over to give me a hand with some of the larger dents. We cut a hole to give access to behind a large dent in the rear panel and he skillfully knocked most of it out. Then he gave me a hand filling and sanding. Sam used to own his own body shop and had list none of his talents.

I hope to get some paint on her this week.

Some Mk2 Golf Gti wheels popped up locally and have gone in for powder coating.

2026-08-12_20-14-40_611.jpg After several days filling and sanding it's finally received a couple of coats of Novol protect epoxy.

I had some more filling and sanding to do before two coats of Novol 320 filler primer. This was interesting as the spec sheet said to use standard thinners. What they really meant was to use Novol standard thinners which is specifically made to go in their two k paints. I quickly discovered that normal standard thinners causes their paint to set in the paint gun
Anyway, two hours gun disassembly and cleaning later I was back on track.

The caddy was moved into the big barn for the final coats. I did this because there were too many flies landing on the fresh shiny paint outside. It seemed like a good idea but it turned out not to be. It was far too dusty in there and there wasnt enough light for me to see properly .
Anyway, three coats later it looks ok but lots of orange peel and dust.

It got moved back into the garage. I started to assess and clean the other parts that need prep and paint.

I've had my fights with painting as well. It seems that that no matter what precautions you take, you will have dust or flies or anything on your fresh paint when not working inside a paintbooth
