Dave - sorry to ask now, but did you check that rear diff from the 90 quattro is the right ratio (4.11:1) ? What code(s) were on it ?

            Well done David.
You're a little way ahead of me. I think I'm about as far from firing mine up as I can be. I still seem to being going backwards with my project.

thats the rear diff changed and bolted up

I put new bolts on the inner driveshafts and on the rear prop cv too and installed new diff mounts. NOTE: the bolts are different lengths which go through the mounts - not that i realised when i checked vagcat this morning before heading off to get some new ones

Installed a new battery, bought the missing banjo for the powersteering pump and a new belt (AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARG, i now have 2 belts the wrong length. For my 3b, the belt length is 12.5x1003mm and not 12.5x992mm which i have been given twice now. The shorter one is listed for loads of 5cyl models but there is a chassis break - well worth checking.

Lights are back on and the left and right plates on the front of the engine. Just need to refit the freshly painted rear wishbones and balljoints and change the gearbox mounts. Hopefully i *should* be able to take it for a run tomorrow after bleeding the brakes and slave cylinder

Now that will be a great birthday present

Way to go David. Full marks for your hard work. I for one, WON'T be looking at your engine bay at ADI. It is probably going to look better than mine.

suddenly the ring doesnt seem that impossible a goal. On Saturday afternoon I was beginning to wonder. Big hats off to pete though, I would still be f*rting about if it wasn't for him helping to drag this towards completion

@Steve, have no fear, looks pretty tidy in there but yours is still a mile better.

Let me know how you get on and if you get most of the bits done, mines in for the mot this morning so hopefully that goes well, if so then i'll be back on the road with it. What times it booked in for the tracking on thursday? and are you planning on working on it before then during the day as i might be able to pop back down and help finish off before I have to work.

Glad we got most of it done on sunday, pity we did not have sat as well as I reckon we would have sent you off driving it up the road for a bit in it Just remember before you fit the wheels back on just have a quick go around checking the bolts from front to back, i.e. rear subframe ones on drivers side and all the front suspension ones to be sure.

Btw I have the center bit for your dials (trip computer) since yours leaked whilst standing if you want it.

Thats it.....it's finally back on all 4 wheels and i took it out for a quick run to the petrol station and back just now.

Tracking is all over the place so it was a bit ahiry but it's book in tomorrow for a 4-wheel alignment so that should be sorted out.

Everything feels nice and tight which is a plus and the car revs cleanly to 50mph, didn't dare go above it lol as it was VERY floaty.

However I have a very very whiny power steering pump - how do you bleed the system of air as i need to do this for sure.

Few things I ran out of time to do before the ring trip this weekend:

                            Gearbox mounts
                            propshaft change

The drivetrain feels amazingly good having changed the rear diff and diff mounts, engine mounts and installed the sport quattro snub mount (that thing pins down the engine like you wouldn't believe) and installing it was fun

Just hope tomorrow i can give it a good run and check everything out with steering that is straight and get the power steering pump sorted.

                            cheers

Make sure you do a good few "shakedowns" before the 'ring trip.

Well done. I am sure the blood sweat and tears will be worth it!
