I always found it weird that audi used a bit of twisted pipe on the bottom of the alternator bracket.

So I tried a pressure test on the boost system, I can't hold pressure for more than about 10 seconds, its dropping pretty quick. I blanked off the PCV system at the MAF hose and put the test bung with tyre valve in the MAF hose
No obvious major leaks, but I can hear the oil bubbling in the block - so does that mean the turbo seals are fooked?

Turbo piston rings do have gaps just like engine piston rings. Once the turbo has coaked up a bit it seals better.

It's a well used turbo, but was working well when I got it... AFAIK.

That does not sound normal from my experience, it will leak down through engine/turbo, but not 10 seconds fast. (I have never tried it on a turbo that sat for ages though, it was always running about 5 minutes before )

What pressure did you go to?

I See no other way for the air to be introduced into the sump other than via turbo seals. However as andy suggests id run the engine first.
