      Found this little gem

A *MIGHTY* find there Mark - hadn't scene that one. Need to translate and digest it now, but by looks of things that guy has gone a bit too shiny on the inlets and sharpened that separator blade - I won't be doing that.

The EX ports need to be super shiny of course.

That cutaway pic is a lifesaver

I've had conflicting opinions on the cam bearing BTW - some say it would be weldable (with care), some say neigh and others say the bearing takes so little load that it will be fine - the crack doesn't go all the way thru.

I had another idea... To use that mental metal filler called 'JB Weld' as that should allow me to fill the crack to redrill the stud hole and make it look a lot tidier.

I'm horrified at the list price of valves and valve guides. None of the valve guides are worn or scored, so I'm very tempted to just leave them be... Except they will get in the way of the porting work. Dangit.

Its shocking how expensive this build up is going to be with a fresh set of valves, lifters and guides, plus the coilpacks, hall sender etc. I'll check all the springs for sanity but can't see a need to renew them at the moment.

Paul. I was also shocked by the price of new valve guides from VAG. As much as I hate to use anything but original parts, especially from GSF, I ended up getting my valve guides from them.
The P/N is 14487, they are the same as MkII Golf 16V VGs as you'd expect.
Hopefuly they'll last more than 6 months like GSF bearings and bushes seem to.

I got Febi valve guides from Vagparts, they were £14 each for the Audi part, and £1.70 each for the Febi. Do the math for 20 if you want a shock!

Good point on the cam bearing, i wouldn’t have thought the load would be very much being at the end. Having said that it also has to take the load from the chain pulling on the intake cam.

I guess the real question is what condition is the bottom of that bearing cap like? If it hasn’t been damaged and sits true with the head i don’t see why it wouldn’t be fixable

The bearing surfaces all seem fine and dandy - aint done much work this week on it - managed to slice a finger open whilst tiling a floor - that'll teach me. Oh got some pics unposted from a while back though.

Here's a couple of valve spring compressors - the upper one is a loaner from Diesel-Des - its the proper monty with adjustability at each end. The lower one is my old one bodged with a socket to give it the right reach for disassembly - it will not work for the rebuild.

When I was playing with the dremel and some attachments I wanted to see what woulld be best for decoking the valves - I'm throwing these 7A EX valves away as they arent sodium filled. I was surprised how easy it was to remove too much material on the valve surface with an ordinary dremel grinding stone...

I need to get a proper set of head-porting stones / widgets before I go anywhere near the head.

The steel wire brush was great for removing coke but I fear its going to be too harsh on the alloy head - maybe need some sort of brass bristles to do less damage.

                  Coke removal?

I'll be trying acid based wheel cleaner or oven cleaner.

Wouldn't advise using a steel brush anywhere on the internals, it will leave small particles embedded in the alloy.

If you buy one of the cheapo Dremel accessory packs off ebay, the wire brushes that come with them are brass not steel

Sorry mate, I WILL post it to you this week.

Aye - you are one big hairy dog alright - with a deep shiny coat, a collar full of bling and a bite to match its bark with the stuff you've been up to on that animal of yours

No sweat on that template - I just figured you hadn't posted until the strike backlog had calmed down. Its not like I'm in a desperate rush for this job. This weekor next is grand.

I'm going shopping for a kit of head porting stones next - any recommendations ?
