Jason all I can say is amazing and very well done.

It is nice to see an old car that has not seen much love and attention eventually get a bit of pampering.

I love the way the car looks when you put the front bumper on it totally transformed the car. The wing looks good as well with the bump strip painted in the same red.
Can't wait for the next installment.

Sat down with a cup of coffee this morning and looking at the clock I have not moved for 25 minutes whilst reading this.

It is good because it is now a car you would not be embarassed to be seen in with the rusty wings and tired paint and also you get unbelievable fuel economy and you now have your S2 for the weekends.

wow, that looks so much better, but why have you painted the original black trim on the wing in red also?

Nice job you got going on there, and interesting read as well

From the last set pf pics, just shows why i love any car in red

Lastly, the bumper change does so much for the for the front end, if id have kept my 2.0 that was one thing on the card for me.

I'll probably have to lower it, or it'll look like it's on stilts, but I can do that later on this year, possibly tying it up with top mount replacements as I think one is on the way out (got a spring twang going on).

Thanks chaps, I'm really enjoying messing around with it. There's only so much I can and want to do to the S2, without taking it too way away from stock, so this is a welcome bit of youth regression, messing around with cars

S2 Avant rear bumper has been sourced and will be getting fitted so that rear trim line matches the front. Not sure about a rear spoiler yet. Maybe

That black trim strip, along with the wing mirrors and door handles are getting colour coded. It would have been daft not to get the painter to do that bit on the wing while spraying the rest.
Just one bit less for me to spray

Would be nice wouldn't it. If "only" Audi had seen the light and made a RHD version
But then with one of those I'd be back to square one paying rip off Labours fuel tax, and not being able to mess around with it

              ..........................................

Just returned from my local specialists where it's had an oil and filter change. I'll do them from now on, but I just wanted to be able to see the cars underside and give it a good once over.
Nothing nasty underneath, everything sound and in good working order. It's still on it's original exhaust too, after 235000 miles

I'll be interested to know if you find the foglight switch connector. I've the fogs on mine but haven't got round to wiring them in. Never bothered to look for the plugs behind the bumper. Will have to have a look and get it sorted.

You can have some proper fun changing bits and bobs on them. As you say there is only so much that you can or want to do to an S2 so it's good to have something else to tinker with on the cheap. Also useful as some bits that come off the S2 can go on the TDi. I had a disagreement with a rock in mine that bent the NS wishbone, steering arm and strut and we had all the bits spare from my S2 suspension overhaul.

                    I'll let you know Ben
Currently looking into the possibility of fitting cruise. I have a new stalk in it's box, and as you'll know, the 1Z is fly by wire throttle. Going to see if it's possible to activate the cruise in vag-com.
Got a helpful chap on fans looking into the pinouts of the 1Z ECU too.

May work, may not. Nothing lost.

Cruise should work depending on the age of your car. If your ECU doesn't support cruise I'm sure one of my umpteen spare ones will.

I was going to do this on mine.Unfortunately as it is chipped and running AFN110 injectors the anti judder system is all over the place and the only cre was to cut the vehicle speed signal wire to the ECU. Car runs fine but without vehicle speed the cruise won't work.

Great info, thanks very much Sir
Would we be able to tell from my chassis number in the first instance, regarding ECU type? If not by grabbing the actual part number off it?
Which leads to a question that sounds daft, but where is the ECU on the 80? presuming in the same place as my S2. This is of course without going hunting for it. Not got that far yet.
                          Cheers again Ben.

Popped those 17's on this morning. Hmmm!! can't make my mind up if they suit.
Tyres on them are all wrong though, they are 215/40/17's where they should be 225/45/17 for a perfect rolling match to the original 195/65/15.

I totally agree, mine was supposed to be a dagdag shitter, so far I have machine polished it all, ordered new aerial, gear lever gaiter, ashtrays front and rear, mats, stereo and now want some pristine OEM wheels of some sort for it too....

ECU is in the usual place. Although to be a proper dagdag driver it should be rattling round in the footwell

Chassis should give ECU details or part number from it would be ideal.

                                Brilliant thread

Jas, just spent an age reading it and it is brilliant to have it posted all in one go and also to be able to get a big "fix" by reading it all in one go!

I know what you mean about leaving it rough, but very few of us can.

Great thread, looking forward to the updates.

Looking forward to the bit on the with the stud pattern on the wheels. What about welding up the holes on breakers yard hubs and having them re-drilled to 5 x 112?

While you'll never be flying around in it, give very serious consideration to getting from the breakers, 2.0L 8v 256-mm vented discs and callipers or better still 2.0L 16v 280-mm vented discs and callipers- and obviously renew the fluid including the bit of the line to clutch slave cylinder on the gearbox.

If the brake callipers on the back are seized you could always consider MK 4 style Golf callipers from the breakers, C & R Enterprises do the necessary brake hose conversion, to allow it to be an easy bolt up job.

Speaking of which, I presume there is no bulges in any of your brake hoses, as it is a new car to you?

Think 17 or 16 inch Avus wheels would be better than the five spokes, but they're nicer than the steels. What about factory 10 spokes or a 16 or 17 factory wheel from a Audi 80 Cabrio?

Looking forward to see how you decide to lower it and how the standard shocks react? While it will look better one or one and half inches lower, keen to see what you think of any deterioration in the ride quality.

I know this might be taking it a step too far, but do the RS2 front and Neuspeed ARBs fit? Assuming you fell over both in the street!

I've wanted to try this for a while with my own fogs in my Avant, i.e. use a Dremel or other such device to cut the grey metal hood/shield off the inside of the foglight housing to turn it into more of a flood light beam pattern?, and wire it in with the main beam circuit?

Consider wiring the headlights with relays from the battery to cheaply, but effectively increase the performance of the standard lights at night?

With the loom behind being the dash switches, I'm betting it won't be and one would have to buy the bit of the loom from the dash to the fuseboard from the Dealers, assuming it was available separately. If not, looking forward to your How To !

Can't believe how well the factory paint comes up. How long do you think it would last if you didn't touch it again on purpose, after you've put on all of the products you have used on the paint?

Continued fun with it, hope fingers heal. Does it need a new bonnet strut from GSF?

Better stop now and get some work done?

                                Kind regards.
