If the car went through a car wash, I would suggest that's your problem. My 2.6 V6 had water in the passenger footwell when I got it. Only really showed badly when the car was parked on a slope and it pooled up in the back like yours.
Mine leaked in 2 places.
1) Passenger window mechanism had been bodged when I bought it. Winder wires on the mechanism were snapped and somebody had used screws to hold the window up. Sadly water got in before the bodge and the window wasn't 100% up after the bodge, so more water. I felt wet carpets when I bought the car but the swimming pool appeared after.
2) If you poured a bucket of water over the passenger side of the windscreen water came in through the heater vents to the feet and through the heater motor body. Fault was down to the pollen filter and the cover that goes over it. I had to seal the shield to the bottom of the windscreen to stop the ingress.
Never leaked a drop after that.
Throw enough water at the car and look to see where water drips and you should spot the leak
Best of luck
Steve
Hi there,
New to the S2 forums, but it looks like you guys might be able to help. I went to my car today (audi s2 L reg 2.0) and the rear passenger footwell had about 2-3 inches of water pooling in there (The car is parked on a mild slant).
The carpet is soaked through, and soaked all under the front passenger seat, and the front passenger footwell! The water is merky, but defiantly not any special liquid like oil or coolant, what makes it more odd is that it hasant rained in days here and I took it through the car wash just last week.
Any comments/remedys, or suggestions to where i can better place this question would be greatley appricated,
Todd.Comment

Did a fair bit of chucking water on the old car, probably about the 3rd worlds share, but to no avail, im guna stick with the more expensive and fiddley heater matrix issue!!Audi 80 coupe White V6 and Blue 2.0, awesome cars, S2 version one day!

Good luck.. Be intereseted to see what the problem turns out to be...
Not sure how it could be the heater matrix though. If you have the amount of water in the car that you seem to do, the coolant expansion tank would be well and truely empty. No way around that. The coolant system is sealed, water comes out and the level goes down. If the level hasn't dropped then the system doesn't leak and the heater matrix is illiminated.
From what you said, it had to be an external leak. You did say the water did not have any fluid smell linked to the car. Coolant has its own odour....Comment

Do you have AC? If so it could be the condensation drain blocked or kinked.
If not I bet it was the car wash that did it, or heavy rain a couple of days before, the water goes down behind the carpet, no visible drips and seeps up through so you don't see it at the time. Check the cover over the heater air intake (and pollen filter if you have one) under the bonnet.Comment

Yeah i have no A/C and no sunroof, and the liquid deffo isint coolant, i was under the impression the heater matrix had just water in it, and that was what was leaking, but it seems not.
I (carefully) pulled up some of the carpet under the passenger footwell today and the yellow stuff under the carpet is completley sodden with normal water, im assuming its like this all down the left hand side of the car till you get to the pooling area of the rear passenger footwell, its guna take aggessssss for it to dry out

Aircon could well be the culprit.
I had a shiny new Peugeot 406 and after my first trip in it which admittedly was 900 miles over a couple of days, it was full of water in the passenger side.
There was a rubber / plastic drain tube which ran through the floor and some lovely French chap had pulled it up and left it to drain under the carpet on the passenger side.
As a result I didn't see any water for the first few trips until I had enough water to soak upwards and sit ontop of the carpet.
Does the car leave water on the ground after / while it runs with aircon on? If it doesn't then that condensation is staying in the car. You normally see a puddle on the ground with aircon cars. If you are new to aircon then at some point you will move the car, dip your finger in the puddle and start the sniff and taste procedure to identify if its coolant. I did and still remember a bloke p*ssing himself at the sight. Never did it again....

Pour some water round the door seals with the door closed and you might find a leak before stripping the car.sigpicComment

Hallo ,guys!
My name is Yavor and i reed this forum from a whild...
The problem, that Toddr has is coming from a little hole ,whitch is under the front hood ,near to the electrical panel .The hole is on the loeft side of this electrical box and there isa a circle rubber, around the front hood rope. This rubber cape probably is fell down inside and the water leaks inside the car.I had the same problem with my coupe and hs solve it by taking the rubber on his place.
I'm sorry ,i'm not very good with English,i hope you undrestand me,mates!
Greetings from Bulgaria!
100% the problem comes from this place, like i said!
Also i put a silicona around the rubber part for sure!

OK I have only skim read this thread but having had several Audis with this issue, let me summarise the common culprits for you to tick off (I know you don't have air con or a sunroof): -
1. Heater Matrix
2. Aircon drain pipe
3. Sunroof drain pipe
4. Pollen filter/fresh air intake
5. Windscreen seal (esp around the pollen filter/fresh air intake)
6. Fuse Box
7. Yamors bonnet release cable grommet
8. Door seals
The heater matrix is easy to spot. You claim the water is clean and not engine coolant (have you cheched your expansion bottle to confirm the last owner put antifreeze in?
If you bottle is full of brown water/antifreeze and your carpet is not, then it less likely to be the matrix (lucky sod, I had to change one on my last Coupe) but another test is to run the engine with the fan off and heater set to cold, then when the engine is warm, set the fan speed to 1 and turn the heat on full. The windscreen will fog up.
I posted some pictures in this thread of my coupe fully stripped to change the matrix. It is a 5+ hour job for a fully trained Audi mechanic!
The air intake for the heater is another common area as it gets checked/changed during a service and not reseated properly. Normally the plastic trim which joins to the windscreen is not tucked back down so water runs down the screen and under the trim, into the cabin via the air intake.
Get a mate to hose each area of the car whilst you carefully check the inside (take the seat out and lie on you back in the footwell) and you'll find the leak. Good luck.
