I do not believe this to be the case. I have been running them on lots of cars and have had very isolated issues. There was a certain one with the wiring melting and frying the ECU in the process, but the MAF is hardly at fault for that, yours with the MAF failing, and another car where a brand new MAF was defective - signal spiking, and was replaced under warranty after which everything has been fine for the past year. This is out of 30 or so cars running about with them. -
be quick then dude.....I think the vat free deal is over at the end of the month...
gald you sorted this and with minimal pain......I'd better keep an eye on my maf now as if Jamo suggests it is a service item better find a good place for replacements....Leave a comment:

Go for 7A cams, inlet and exhaust. You will lose your surge and you will have noticeably more top-end power. Put them to stock marks, no adjustment.
Trust me, it will work just fine.Leave a comment:

The RS2 exhaust cam seems rather pointless given the surge, so i was discussing with Will to get something to increase top-end.
Water meth would decrease intake temps and increase octane so timing can be advanced, and thus more power, right?
Intake... hmmm. Well it's running wagner IC with reverse inlet, and the head is fully ported, so is completely optimised at every point apart from the airbox which is an obvious restriction with the 4" inlet along with the RS4 MAF diameter and the turbo inlet.Leave a comment:

Ignition timing is fine I think, the problem is the engine does not breathe as well as it could.Leave a comment:

Thanks for the research gents, i've sorted out getting a replacement with AndyP as i currently have his MAF unit... i'll be sending it back up to him with some funds to cover a replacement
Nothing like commitment to the cause
I need to discuss with Will first, but it would be good to have an idea of timescales to know when the work could take place.
I believe that sorting the cams out would go a long way to resolving the timing and power drops i currently have, and the aquamist kit being a real bang-for-buck upgrade to further enhance power output.Leave a comment:

I keep postponing it. I will put down some firm dates and back it up with buying non-refundable airline tickets as well. Just so much work here, booked for 2 weeks in advance all the time.Leave a comment:

Glad to hear it's sorted Andy, I was surprised the MAF caused it to run horrendously but it did look to be electrical related. I was sure it was soothing dodgy with your ignition, after you had a brief 'normal' moment when fiddling with the coil packs.
ECP sell the Bosch RS4 MAF, along with the other cheap alternates. You can use PAT30 for 30% off which brings it to £62 plus VAT, you'll have to pay the £24 surcharge but just swap the sensor + return it to get that back.Leave a comment:

Confirmed it's an exchange item from GSF ( can't buy sensor only), GSF PN 187vg049.
Price is £70 plus vat retail £25 surcharge for non exchange
Cheaper if you can get trade priceLeave a comment:

You've noticed?
Likewise - they're far easier to get hold of anyway which is good!
The reaction to a knackered maf was far more extreme than I'd ever have thought, I mean the car was undriveable and even after running the car for only a few minutes whilst trying to diagnose all 5 plugs were black. The only other time I've felt the car that bad was after the first botched rebuild with low compression!
Cheers looks like the way to go then, and no problem now I have the wierd torx tool to just change the sensor! You can not buy only the element. I have been down this road and I failed.
The only elements you will find are chinese knockoffs. I am afraid you need to get the exchange MAF, and do the trick I described earlier (swap the sensor with your old used one!)
The RS4 exchange MAF's are MUCH cheaper than the S2 items, this is at least a good thing.
Any idea when you're next over? I want to look at resolving the power "issues" and timing retardation this year in the form of changing the cams, stock pulley and Aquamist with a remap.
Thanks mateMRC will tell you RS4 MAF's should be treated as serviceable items, you should replace them annually or bi-annually as whilst they don't fail don't measure correctly over time. I replace mine every service I'm due to change it end of year.
AndyP I got mine from GSF exchange item. I got a discount but about £70 sounds right I can check tomorrow.

My MAF has been showing bang on for the past 2 years. Nothing has changed, go figure.
They do get wildly inaccurate if you contaminate them with oil though.Leave a comment:

Wow, you have all the luck in the world.
These RS4 MAF's fail extremely rarely. I have dozens of cars running about with them, many for more than two years and tens of thousands of miles with no issues.
I am very glad it's sorted though!!!
