Air leak post TB would tie in with the rich running and reduced boost too...

Sure you haven't popped a hose?

Thinking about it, this is pretty much how my car ran until i realised the breather hose had popped off the IM - didn't want to idle, felt 'good' above 2000 RPM but still really wasn't running right. Once I found it - car was fine!

What about one of the vacuum lines that goes into the car and through to the diff lock etc.?

Pressure test will show that instantly anyway.
Sounds to me like a popped hose.

I will be with JP and Lloyd end of this week, and I will have three days, so let's hope everything works out

Andy, I have same problems - boost 1.45, bad idle, AFR, Oil in the MAF hose.
I have been trying to solve this problem for about 2 years. I have checked much more things that you have, but I haven`t checked TP. I assume there can be air leak after TB or breather hose connector corrosion.

So, please keep us in touch. It would be very helpful for me.

Checked all the hoses, boost and vacuum, and connectors - cant see anything obvious but will need a more thorough check.

Just checked the oil level, and it seriously needed topping up, so that confirms what the white smoke billowing from the exhaust is... Will get it up to wills this week as soon as I can arrange a lift!

Impossible to see small leaks without pressurising the system and spraying soapwater on all hoses and fittings and see where the bubbles come from. Big leaks you can hear of course.

White smoke is turbo oil seals as a general rule of thumb. Which can also possibly answer your boosting issue?

Well, what a bloody evening yesterday!

I drove the car up from work in Aylesbury to Will's garage in Northampton, about an hour's drive... unfortunately the car had got progressively worse to drive, and had turned from having the odd misfire on idle and stalling issue, to intermittently cutting out and misfiring so badly <3krpm that it would stall.

Gear changes and slowing down for any reason (roundabouts, junctions, crossings, traffic lights, buses stopping, oncoming traffic...) would cause the car to stop if the revs dropped, the thing certainly wouldn't idle.

So there i am, trying to get the car up there without it stalling, having to go through Milton Keynes - round-about central of the world

Every junction i was backing off early, shifting it down through the box trying to keep the car moving and looking for a gap, or waiting for the lights to go green. On the occasions i did have to stop i'd be dipping the clutch to get it out of gear, and heel-and-toeing it to slow the car down and keep the revs up...on the occasions where it did stall and i didn't manage to catch the throttle, i'd always ensure i'd left enough momentum to pull in the clutch and jump the car again - knowing that if the car stopped and stalled, i was complete ****ed

Getting to the M1 was a godsend, but by this time i could feel the odd misfire even sat at 60mph, and any kind of boost had seemingly disappeared, the turbo would cut out intermittently, but for the most part i was sat in 6th gear completely off-boost anyway.

Unfortunately worse was to come in Northampton, now rush-hour traffic was queued up badly and i didn't really know my way around. Some-how, i managed to keep the car rolling, and find myself in the right area near Will's place...

I eventually found the garage, pulled round the corner, and braked sharply because of somebody else flying down the road - the car instantly cut-out, and there i was, outside VRS, car-stalled, and no attempt to start would work. If it had happened anywhere else, i'd have been completely stuffed

After this i headed down to Swindon to borrow Ross's Golf whilst he's on holiday... so i still have a run-about

Will now has the car and i eagerly look forward to finding out WTF is going on with it, and getting it running. Thanks very much for the help all

What time you down mate? Might pop up and see you if you're about now that i have an uber-economical diesel golf to run around in

By all means have a nosey at the car - there is some other interesting stuff in the workshop as well
