I guess JP knows better, but if you look at his dashboard picture, you can see things such as oil pressure etc being monitored. You can do a lot of other things as well, such as per-cyl EGT's and per-cyl enrichment based on feedback from them.
There is also more than one person who can map your car.

JP's car is not your average project car, where you put some hardware together and you are done. It's a show car for showing off his work and a development platform, and thus it is bound to undergo constant changes, as well as requiring precise measurement of each iteration.
So it is of great benefit to have something that allows you to log a lot more things than an average car needs, as well as the ability to alter things for little changes done constantly.

There is always the right tool for the job, and when you want to log 10+ extra channels than what is available from factory, the stock ECU is definitely not the right tool.

Is that the reason for going aftermarket?

Motronic can't really do per-cylinder EGT.

What happened to the good old motronic? I thought you were set there without issues!

Well the updates are not getting any more frequent as barely enough time in the day to breath. However just slipped a disc in my back this morning and having a breather waiting for the painkillers to kick in so figured to have gander at the s2forum and do a little update.

Car is finally all back together after a year of being of the road.

Had great fun re wiring the engine bay to get the most out of the new management, typical storm before the calm scenario.

Changed over from the 034 coilpacks to the redtops to tidy up the bay area

    (p.s. 034 ones are for sale )

Also decided to make my own header tank - work in progress

And got some custom centre caps made courtesy of G23 Engineering

Car all running on a 60-2 trigger using Maxx Ecu now. Last time I did tuning was when carburettors and dizzy's where the in thing so the digital advances was a steep learning curve in learning the interface.
Not bad though as got a perfect idle and lambda with no lambda or idle control on 1000cc injectors. Although once the base ve table was correct I switched them all on to allow for fuel quality variations.

Having an easy to use interface has been a godsend as has made my baseline mapping a doddle, especially once I new how all the parameters interfaced with each other to tweak driveability. Being able to log a 125 channels meant I could go for a drive and sit in the comfort of my lounge late at night after work and tweak the map based on the logs.

Got perfect warm start anywhere upto 70c intake temps, cold start I haven't finished 100% as switched of the intial priming function in order not to flood the engine during the process of continuously switching the ecu on and of during mapping. The best bit ever despite having a 4kg flywheel with twin plate clutch managed to tweak the map so I can pull away from idle as if it were a stock clutch. Never thought I could so easily do the school run with a twinplate!

Currently got her running reliably upto 1.5bar and 6000rpm redline so far having clocked up 250+miles on the new engine.

Shockingly still looking fresh as ever despite not having been washed for a year in this pic and left in the elements on the drive testament to Quattro Coachworks work. Unfortunately Mr Useless needs to get the bumper resprayed as he left it lying around his garden for a year whilst the car was in peaces through two major storms

Now just awaiting the time when Jonus can come over from Norway to do the power mapping.

Love the soft finish on the plenum chamber looks very classy and very reminiscent of the Delorian stainless brushed finish.

Sorry for the quiet spell. Work has been mayhem and customers jobs always come before personal projects.

Pop lots and lots of trimming behind bumper to fit a cooler that large. As for breathing thats been covered several times on its own thread somewhere on this forum.

In the meanwhile been busy putting some finer touches on the engine bay wishing to finish the finer details I never got round to like the bigger intercooler.

First of I found the new power steering alloy tank could boil over sometimes so I decided to fit a bigger power steering cooler.

Along with the bigger steering cooler, intercooler & new rad I decided to go for a new oil cooler too.
As you can see I also replaced the 034 coilpacks with late red audi ones to further clean up the bay.

Lastly been trying to get a header tank for over a year from various companies of which none wanted to entertain it due to the difficult shape so figured sod it let's make it myself in what little spare time I have. As you can see work in progress but slowly getting there.

There's a load of other bits I've been refining but going to leave info on them until done as a whole, as wish for the whole cosmetic vision to be complete before releasing it
