They were fitted with either type, but the shiney one suggests there must have been an "issue" with the original. (possible accident damage) People will tell you that the pressed steel (shiney) one will flex, I don't know if you'd be able to tell the difference. I have seen that the casts ones are rock solid I once saw a wishbone left in situ when the ball joint had been ripped off.

Handbrake cables are not too expensive, you can free of the calipers quickly, but they seize up again, or get new/refurbed or do a full strip yourself.

The stamped ones can bend from a bump off a kerb etc, the other ones are more likely to break something esle.

I'll try and source another cast arm, clean up the other and get the poly bushed before refitting then.

Play in the diff as in you can turn the prop/input almost an inch either way without the wheels moving. Clunks during aggresive gearchange or even when rocking the car forward and back

There was a front wheel drive coupe in Persley last week might be good for a few bits?
Cant remember if the headlights were left but you might get a caliper and wishbones off it for pennys

I'll take a look tomorrow, thanks Are the rear calipers from the FWD the same as the quattro??

Can anyone recommend an online retailer to get Bilstein shocks from?

No. My dad stole a set of my S2 coupe rear calipers to fit to his 100 2.8 quattro though.

You wanting new? Refurbed? Custom Auto craft do new "improved" versions. You can get refurbed ones for less than £100 each, about £70 iirc by sending back your seized ones.

That sounds like a fair bit of lash from the diff, you might be able to get a good 7A one and just swap the output flanges..

Cheers Andy, I figured they might be different. Hopefully the scrap car still has something for my greasy mits

I'll probably just get a refurbed pair from dingbro/motorfactors. Should be able to get cost price through some contacts, so £50-60. I'm aiming for good, original condition before looking to upgrade parts and power. So there's a long way to go!

I appreciate all the help you guys have given so far, and sorry if I don't always follow or ask some dumb ****. I'm a massive car enthusiast but this S2 is a different kettle of fish to my last two (4-pot) coupes. Having seen the underside, I know I'll be keeping this for the long term, so I've loads of time to learn!

As well as a recommended Bilstein dealer I'd love is someone could recommend me a fault code reader for the 3B's 2x2 port set up.

I use vagcom 311-2 and a cheap lead from ebay with a 2+2 adapter.

I might have a couple of less than perfect headlights, what wrong with yours?

That oil might all be coming from the PAS pump, especially as the steering was groaning which meansd the fluid is low. You need G004000.

Both lugs that the under headlight trim screw into are snapped.

                            Ordered yesterday and today:
                            New genuine battery earth lead
2 new genuine hand brake cables
5 Bosch spark plugs (eurocarparts are doing a 30% discount this holiday weekend)
                            New Bosch S5 battery (ouch)
                            Fault code reader
Caliper piston spreader (sick of being a cowboy and using a g-clamp )

                            Collected today:
Front and rear Audi dealer plates. Not sure on the American rear. Will see how the new regular plates look and maybe flog the US-spec one)
                            2 sidelight bulb holders
                            Fuel filter
                            Oil filter

I thought I'd try out the LED sidelight bulbs. Can't be any worse than the standard items.

Priced up stainless boxes for the cat back. £428 delivered. Probably a July/Aug purchase, not a priority now. £500 of Bilstein B6 dampers will be ordered before to the exhaust.

Awaiting a price back on 2 new rear calipers. Will hopefully get away with a refurb kit for the fronts.

Car's booked in for later in the week to find the source of the PAS leak. Almost certain that a dealer-only pipe will be needed.

Nice little collection of bits, when does the fun start?

LED sidelights makes the dip and main beam look really yellow, they also are highly visible but dont seem to cast much light (if that makes sense). They look good with HIDs in the dip beam as the colour matches.

You will find one side will sit around 5mm lower than the other. I had a cast on the passenger side of mine and pressed on the drivers when I had 19's on my first ever s2 (the garage damaged my drivers cast changing the wishbones) And used to find the drivers side 19 caught the arch unlike when it was on the cash wishbone so I did a road trip to sal and changed it for a cast.

Get koni's if you can as they are smoother on the road and not as harsh as bilsteins.Think error404 has a set of 4 with hnr lowering springs for sale currently for cheaper than you'd buy the shocks alone from a dealer.

The exhaust ask s2tornado as he's just picked up a coupe for breaking with a stainless.

the pipe's I have loads of them so let me know, won't want much for whichever one you require.
