Engine builder decided to try and solve their inability to measure piston to valve clearance with a die grinder.

Ok... With the pistons removed obviously?

So how, why, did that happen? I suspect a more aggressive cam was installed and more clearance required? Then the engine was already in the car so the job was done half to save time?

Nope the engine builder couldn’t be arsed to strip the pistons out to address their issue with their (lack of) clearance measurement so they pulled the head off and used a die grinder on the pistons in situ = total failure.

Wtf. Really. Seems almost unbelievable that a true engine builder would do that. Is he know to the community? Corey isn't about again...

Have we really got the complete picture here? As with most things there are 2 sides to a story, and someplace in the middle is what actually happened. Sure is odd.

I’ve seen it with my own eyes Des feel gutted for John after all the money he’s spent with jnl and trust and the fact he’s ground the pistons in the block is beyond a true engine builder.

Just to clarify who is the questionable engine builder?

I just don't buy the story as presented sorry. Are we saying an engine was built on the stand and then the valve pockets needed machining. Then the engine builder was too lazy to take apart and fix it properly?
Or are we in a more likely situation that the engine was built and running. At a later date extra clearance was needed for a cam probably. Then the pistons where modified in situ for some bizarre reason? Both have different potentials for external influences I would of thought. Something doesn't add up.

Has the builder admitted that's what they did? The marks sort of look like material has melted and been blown down past the rings or across the face of the valve pocket. If you remember MarkH's build with JE pistons, they melted away in the same location where the valve pocket in the piston has a sharp profile. If it was actually ground down in situ to remedy a problem with clearance, that's a poor way of attempting a fix!

                          never nice to see this.

as a side note what denotes you are qualified to build an engine? certificates, 4 leaf clover, rabbits foot, customer testimonials (presumably based on some of the other 3).

id say common sense and care. lets face it. its just bits of metal fastened together.

im an it consultant and built my engine 8 years ago. its my daily driver, burns no oil and spits no metal. i used no special tools, no fancy parts.

ill say it again. common sense and care.

I agree. And if a "engine builder" was forced/requested to do something against his advice is it really the engine builders fault or the guy who just wanted it to happen?

For example I had an old car come to me with a broken timing belt.  I removed the head and found bent valves and, damaged head and a piston that had damage from the impact, and some scoring in that bore.  The advice from me to the owner that the engine needed rebuilt/swapped.  Due to the age of the car the owner arrived with a used good head and requested me to tidy it up and make it run.  I taped off the top of the block and used a vacuum while I polished out the worst of the sharp edges on the crown of the piston.  Also rubbed the score in the bore with some 120 sand paper to take the edge off.  Put it together and it ran ok, used some oil, but the owner got another 2 years before the car was an MOT failure on rust.

So what I did was wrong, engineering wise, against my advice, but it was what the owner wanted, and was ultimately fit for purpose.  I see similarities here.

i can understand that too however surely its in the best interest of both parties for the builder to be firm and ensure its done correctly (or be paid up and release the part finished work) to ensure reputations and standards are upheld. especially with the overall package and standard thats to be attained.

i have an issue with corner cutting for whatever reason. human nature means if we cut corners once successfully we are more likely to do it again.
