  • Taff's UR Saloon

    Hi chaps, at it again.....

Latest project on the cards to be done in stages. It's an Audi 90 quattro belonging to Taff.

A brief history by my understanding is that Taff acquired the car and fitted it with ABY coupe running gear, 6 speed box and sat an ABY engine in the car for it to be plumbed in at another garage.

Taff was fed up of waiting for progress so contacted me in relation to getting it running.

The main appointment was made to do the wiring for him and get it to point where he could drive it.

However the task list grew massively so a thread has begun....

I collected the vehicle from Stourbridge on Saturday afternoon and rolled it into the yard Tuesday dinner time....

The ABY that is in the car is not in the best of health and Taff has another ABY engine that is a know good running engine.

So it was decided that this engine should come out.

Also as he wanted to retain the standard clocks in the car and the 6 speed box has magnetic/electric sender it needed converting to be able to use the speedo drive from an earlier box.

An old FWD box was used to rob the speedo drive from. And this was then installed into the 6 speed.

The front panel on the car has suffered from tin worm and the front panel had some other damage.

So it was decided that this should be removed and the replacement front valance from a UR quattro will be used.

This then led from one thing to another and has ended up a huge never ending list of tasks......

So while the engine and box is out. There was not a lot else left in the engine bay so the rest of the stuff was removed so that it can be painted ready for everything to go back in looking much tidier than when it came.

    Taff's UR Saloon

The ABS block had been relocated slightly further back from its original location as the battery box had been hacked from the engine bay already.
This was not ideal so the bracket work was completely removed. The rest if the battery tray has been ground away and cleaned up, and then I have fabricated new bracket work to mount the ABS block close up against the bulkhead.

Before painting we also chose to weld in the strut brace towers from an S2 to stiffen the shell up a little.

Next we offered up the Front wings to see what modifications were required. The cills have been roughly trimmed back ready for UR cills to be added later. The wings will need quite a lot of refurbishment but are salvageable.

We have also now added the UR wing support brackets under the wing for bumper mounting etc.

An Avant battery tray had been bolted to the boot floor and was not the nicest place to put it so this will be removed and I have spent this evening chopping a hole under the rear seat and modifying a battery tray and welded this in. The orientation is different to a UR and similar to the sport quattro to give more room underneath for fuel pump and filter.

Taff wanted to save money and said the fuel lines were ok, but after smelling petrol could see they were well past it to be fair.

So the front to rear brake pipe has been re routed to run along the drivers side floor and I have run new lengths of PTFE stainless braided hoses fit and forget ready for future upgrades....

Last little mod for the evening was to re locate the front brake pipe brackets on the inner wing as we noticed the brake pipe flexi's were on the verge of being ripped out on full lock.

Next on the list is for Tom to work his magic and make it all look pretty where I have been at it with the plasma cutter and welder.

That's it for now, will update with the next instalment tomorrow....

Can't wait to see this. The Silver one that was posted a year or two back is still one of my favorites

I would love a saloon with all the flared wings like this looks like its going to have, along with a running gear and engine set up like this. Would be a proper little sleeper. Good work so far and will be watching this one!

Love your work rate. It's as quick as watching them do a rebuild of a car on TV.

Fast 'n Loud / Gas Monkey / Wheeler Dealer etc.

Will be a great finished article, and very much worth the undoubted expense.

A real case of while this is being done, I might as well do this also, which is cheaper and more satisfying in the long run, even though financially painful at the time. But it is easier to repay a loan than have to redo it later / double up on your work and all that that entails.

The more discrete the exterior appearance is, the better, imho.

Wishing you both not too many headaches with it.
