You would do well just to spend a tenner and get a cheapie VW/Audi code reader off ebay, saves so much hassle.

If all you are after is codes, then it is plug and play, no laptop needed.

If you want to look at values then you can pull out vagcom, assuming you have it?

        This:

        http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/U281-VW-Au...E:L:OC:GB:3160

        plus this:

        http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-AUDI-Sk...item43c81513e7

Little more than a tenner, but makes the job so easy.

Works on my 1991 7A-engine coupe, lives in the glovebox, and I have permanently fitted the OBD port to the car, so easier to plug/unplug

So, is the 'code pulling' the same as reading it with vagcom. ?

After doing a quick search on ebay.com to see if there any U281 Scanners on offer in Canada or the US, I discovered that they all came out of China. So I went with the one on ebay.co.uk linked above. As I complete the purchase, I see the fellow is Chinese with a London address. I will be interested where it actually gets shipped from (China or the UK). Went with the 2x2 adapter as well.

Yes, but vagcom can give you more info than just the fault codes.

So there is no point for me to spend more money on things I don't need.

Vagcom won't find an issue, says everything is ok. I tested the maf and all the measurements seem to be ok.

I notice power loss occasionally, as in, I accelerate and feel like something is holding the car back. And then it's ok again. Any ideas?

Correct, it's useful though when you don't have VAG COM with you and you need to read/erase a code.

                            Thanks.

As I know quite a lot of people here have done engine rebuilds, how much would top engine rebuild cost in parts, as I would do all the work myself?

It doesnt look quite right, I think if you take the door moldings off you have to do the same to the bumpers
