    Point well taken.

The water ingress ruined the headlining, drivers seat, carpet and much under felt. That and I always had an itch to strip an S2 and do my best to build it into something more fun.

That and the top windscreen rusty bits mean I am looking at a high quality respray before it would pass mettle alongside the garage queens if I did decide to refit the trim and such - but I see no joy in that - even if it did make more sense financially.

    • This is the next milestone I am aiming for - what's not to like ?
Other than the apparent price tag of 900-1200 plus professional fitting of course.
Thats the weld-in multipoint device from https://www.customcages.co.uk - available in CDS or T45 - other pics on their website

      • Bit more progress over the weekend. One last chunk of loom left to remove - I ran out of energy to go through six more hoops just to get the front washer bottle plug.

Both front door cards off as well - discovered something unknown (to me anyway) - I knew there would be little bit of rain ingress at the pillars without the door rubbers attached to the cards, but the action of closing the door actually squeezes the outer door rubber uo against the entire length of the window. Never noticed before.

All four door trim rubbers looking very poor - I have new ones in a box somewhere. Anyway - likely be selling all the OE carbon equipped door cards along with a bunch of other trim parts that I dug out of storage for a quick spruce up today.

Post more pics soon - need some time to annotate the best ones.

        • Are you fitting a new custom loom for the cars?

          Comment

          • Very good question - that kept me awake a few hours after the battles of loom removal. On the UK cars, the looms make a really stupid route with heavy amounts of cable crossing the bulkhead area. Removal of aircon heater unit also creates new holes in the bulkhead in fairly friendly places for alternative options to do things.

I think a full blown custom loom would be amazing, but also crazy expensive (I did once price up some motorsport grade connectors and they were huge money) - it would also be hugely time consuming, so I am thinking more towards a customised chop job on the existing looms so I can re-use OE connectors, shorten lots of cable runs and use lots of new available space on passenger side to mount ECU, or other active components on that side of the car to keep that huge amount of spaghetti away from driver pedals. I would also like to make the loom a bit more modular so I don't need to eat the elephant in one sitting.

I need to work that all out properly - cannot do worse than shocking state of OE wiring install - but thats for long after the cage goes in and I figure whether to carve up a dashboard or have something fabricated.

Anyway - keeping all the looms for now in storage boxes for some very rainy days when I have to work all that out.

            • OK - trying to get the annotated backs into sequence again - well enough that its useful for others and helps me remember down the line !

Last annotated pics where up to point where I had the instrument / dashboard loom removed - none of that goes through a bulkhead. In order to get next sections of loom out, I need to disconnect everything inside the doors. I started on the passenger (LEFT) side.

              - Easy enough getting the door card off - firstly one screw at the B-Pillar end
              - Then three of those 4mm Allen headed fixings in the door handle to expose the two little screwed on brackets roughly centre of the door.
              - Disconnect the electric window switch as you remove the handle
              - When you have those removed its just a case of gently yet firmly lifting the door card up and out of a number of clips that secure it to the actual door.
              - A second pair of hands is very handy for the next stage where you have to first slice or peel back a little bit of tape on rear of door release handle in order to tease out the bung to get the cable pull from the handle (to catch the fly to catch the spider etc)
              - 4528 - Now the door card is free to come out and you are left with the bare door
              - 4524 - easy enough to unplug the two connectors at bottom corner of the door where the central locking actuator sits, and unplug the control pipe as well
              - 4525 - on the passenger side I was a bit perplexed why the window motor didn't seem to have its own connector tail
              - 4527 - turns out its a two-part connector where it mates with the window switch so you just carefully pry them apart so you can get the loom cabling out
              - not shown is the fairly long cable for the electric mirror - easy enough unplugged

Best word of advice to anyone refurbishing doors is to take lots of detailed pics and notes where things are clipped and such - the routing of the cables is very specific to ensure nothing snags on the window.

              • With that in mind - I took some more pics on the driver side

4537 - the loom plugs for the locking are colour coded nicely. Blue for the actuator. Black for the door look.
4539 - cable clip at front
4540 - lots of tywraps holding cables to a plastic guide for presentation to the door handle switches
4541 - rubber boot secures one of the window cables to the frame so it stays in good position (and does not rattle)
4542 - interesting lump of extruded aluminium alloy bar for door intrusion protection (just for info)
4544 - the cone shaped end of the rubber cable boot is the door side
4545 - window switches are labelled FS & BS so stay awake !
4546 - the driver side window motor does not clip into the main switch like on the passenger side - its has a separate plug
4547 - cables unclipped almost ready to remove
4548 - this one is for the electric mirror - again pay attention to routing down the front internal side of the door with a couple of clips that are tricky to remove
4550 - removing all cables from the lower clip
4551 - the pain robot missed a bit here ;-) Note also one of the door clip rubber inserts stayed with the door frame and not the card

Not much else to say on this one, except I had just enough room to do this - you really want to be able to get the door completely wide open as its quite fiddly getting each plug out through the door grommet.

                • The next bits are already a bit hazy for removing the rest of the loom. Some patience is required to do this in the right frame of mind as other components in the engine bay need to be removed along the way of hopping inside and outside to check the state of everything. Its not complex - just a bit tedious.

4485 - Annotated to show the bulkhead points where the various cables enter the cabin.

It looks quite imposing at first sight, but you just have to take your time - again with notes and photos to help along the way. With the main fusebox and aux relay panel all gone, and everything unplugged from the rear I was able to get the rear loom relatively easily separated. I cannot recall exactly how it plugged into the other loom sections, but I labelled everything that was disconnected as I went along.

4558 - I pulled the main cabin loom along with the pink tube and whatever other gubbins attached on that spaghetti ball.

There is somewhere at the drivers A-pillar where the cabin loom connects to the section for sunroof and courtesy light(s)... again just label everything !

                  • Some more tedium attached in pics trying to show capture pics of many places where loom is clamped etc.

                    Notable points as follows :

4573 - unscrew the bracket for the POS units
4589 - the connector at the brake fluid level switch is niggly enough to remove
4590 / 4591 - the two spades for the brake servo switch is even more annoying as you need to get the bracket moved for clearance
4593 - the starter solenoid cable makes a really circuitous route around the engine bay where it eventually marries up with large grommets and main feed cable near driver side of the chassis

I think the monster grommets connecting somewhere on the front subframe but that was removed years ago so I will work that out whenever. Also seems like the main feed cable from battery goes through driver side bulkhead, into that chassis leg and out the front end.

                    • And so it continues... in order to free up passenger (left) side of the engine loom for things like the hydraulic fluid level switch, one has to remove the ABS control unit as that prohibits access other wise.

4594 - there is an earth strap under the ABS controller as well that needs to be removed
4600 - label all the pipes (mine will all get replaced - but its the principle of the thing)
4604 - 2 x torx screws secure the cover on the ABS unit
4605 - unplug the brown connector
4607 - off with those earth straps (which include red/black wires - that is an outrageous break from age old Audi wiring convention)
4610 - more damn cable clips
4611 - pretty ugly down in this corner - lots more clips - combining engine & vehicle loom plugs
4617 - with so many plugs so close together on the engine side, I chose to carefully pull the engine loom through from the engine compartment... taking the smaller plugs first - note there is an annoying 2-pin extra loom combined in with the engine loom that was clearly an oversight
4618 - I heavily protected the ECU 55-pin plug with tape before teasing it through the bulkhead
4619 - and there is the entire engine loom... the yellow taped sections are inside the cabin - with the left corner of pic where it connects with fusebox at UK drivers side

                      • And so it continues...

4620 - with the engine loom out, the next target is what I call vehicle loom 1 - the upper most lump of wires in that corner
4621 - with all the clips already loosened for the engine loom, this one is happy enough to start moving - pulling from INSIDE the cabin this time
4622 - dunno if my car I unique with this 'WTF' feature from the factory where some coconut decided to join vehicle loom 1 with vehicle loom 2 in that special way with the black plug - bizarre
4623 - nothing else to do but label it and cut the ****** off as this single wire links two large looms together - there must have been a shortage of the other connector gender that day (tsk tsk Hans und Franz)
4624 - thats another one out - this looks like radiator fan & aircon wiring
                        4625 - peekaboo

Which reminds me - that loom also needs unbolting from the resistor pack for the radiators - need special attention to what wire goes where on that - and lots of penetrating oil on those crusty looking eyelets. Mine all came off with little drama. I have pics of that somewhere.

4627 - now we are up to date with two of the bulkhead looms pulled through

4628 - my lovely daughter fashioned this little health and safety modification on the confounded dashboard bracket after asking why my head was bleeding - I head butted that funking thing (on both sides) so often that I almost became numb. They are top of the list for some future angle grinder action.

I would have continued further in that corner with the horns and washer bottle, but one plug needs a lot more disassembly before I can remove that cleanly. I needed a break, a beer and a blood transfusion - not necessarily in that order.

                          • Darn right - custom of some sort anyway. All the wiring and procon ten cables removed - more pics to post here soon. Only a few larger items left to remove before I can say the strip stage is fully finished.

                            - fuel tank
                            - steering rack
                            - steering column
                            - foot pedals
                            - sunroof

Only notable event so far was having to reach for the angle grinder to remove the rear inertia-reel seat belt as there isn't enough access to get a socket onto it - that went with quite a pop when the cutting wheel made contact with the big coiled spring. I don't really like that way of doing things, but it was a necessity in this case and actually a little bit satisfying if I am honest.

                            • Getting back to the picture fest... next for the wiring loom room removal was the small loom.

4485 & 4718 - identifying the location of the small loom from the inside - I already labelled where the plugs connected in the cabin
4721 - just as well as I have no recollection what these two small plugs are actually for in the engine bay
4722 - very easy pulling this through into the cabin - just the proton ten cable and two more vehicle looms left

Quite simple this one too - just unclip the cables in the engine bay for the ABS sensor and gently pull the loom through from inside the cabin - taking care with the plug on the ABS head unit.

                                4485 - overview again
                                4722 - starting point
4720 - ABS connector on passenger side
4725 - ABS connector on driver side
4723 - All of these connectors on cabin side is why it gets pulled from this side !
4724 - Its a long enough loom that extends to the ABS & diff lock controllers under the rear seat (already unplugged all that)
4727 - On the way out (into the cabin)
                                4728 - And its out
                                4729 - All in tact

I am of the mind to NOT refit the ABS on the rebuild - its not going to be a road car - I can remove a bunch of weight and complexity - less wires, less plumbing, less to go wrong (until I lock up the front tyres and make like Mr Plough into the Armco) and no more hateful ABS sensors to seize themselves into my hub carriers.
