How did the petrol get into the sump? I presume from an injector leak?
I haven't read further back than this page so forgive me if this has been covered. Obviously a leaky injector will cause bad starting but I guess you could have hyro-locked a cylinder? Hopefully not though!
It was leaking injector yes, but once I swapped in a replacement, engine started with occasional misfire, next morning she started and was barely ticking over, and had a loud knock. When i remove all the plugs, engine turns over easily without knocks.
I am thinking, oil was too thin and it all dripped into the sump, and when I was starting it I spun the bearing.

Polishing the bearing surfaces on a crank should be about 50 quid. Balancing is a different game. Talk to jp and jnl racing. About 350. He would need your rods and pistons bearings pullys and flywheel etc.
If you are still up in the Leeds area these guys do a great job at reasonable money. Bot myself and my dad have had major engine work carried out there and it been perfect.
Don't these engines have harmonic balancers, a bit like the old big block V8 engines?
I remember the Mopar 383 had one and it was common for the anti freeze to leak out of the water pump and rot the rubber on the balancers and you'd end up with an engine that would vibrate like hell!!
A perfectly balanced engine puts the minimum stress on bearings and components and thus will have a better life expectancy, especially when driven harder. It also will rev more willingly and you can safely use more revs, although the rods re normally the limiting factor in terms of revs (not considering the oil pump).
Obviously the engine will drive more smoothly. Factory engines are balanced to a point but in mass production corners are cut for cost/efficiency of production and there are good improvements to be had by having your rotating assembly properly balanced. If you are changing any signifcant parts of the rotating assembly i.e. rods, pistons, flywheel etc you really should get the re-done to preserve the balance. In short its not essential but IMHO foolish not to when you have the cost of a rebuild on your hands you may as well do the job right.
PS: the harmonic balancer has nothing to do with balance it is there to damp harmonic resonance that would otherwise put strain on the crank (potentially crack it over time).
She just needs new bushes ASAP. Went for budget choice as Albert's polybushes are on the parts list. Running issues are still there, but that's being sorted....hopefully.
