i agree with alex, when i had my oil pressure problems in the past there was also grind into the oil thermostat Due to the faltered bearings
if you think the problem is due to poor oil cooling than I think there must be more bad bearings in your engine.............
no crank damage?

Really annoying but at least you know now... she was sounding fantastic in those video flybys - what is the sound limit at Kirkistown these days out of interest ?
Not sure but the Quattro was actually not that loud compared to some stuff.

Crank will need a polish or even a light grind on number 3 rod. Its real odd as this has clearly been an oil issue with the tappets getting noisy and then the bearing failure but I had good oil pressure and 4.6l of oil drained from the sump so I don't know. The only thing I can see is this oil thermostat issue and as the cooler was cold then it all seems to point in that direction?
Gutted to hear this Des, what a kick in the *****.
I cant remember the layout of the oil passages, but isn't the head supply taken from one of the big end oil feeds? Just wondering if something went wrong in the head which was bleeding off the oil pressure, and in turn lowering the supply pressure to that big end. Would explain the noisy lifters...

I think the gallery that has the oil pressure sensor also feeds the head and the crank. But it's something I definitely will be checking out.
Exactly, you have the two pressure senders and the check valve in the head feed, but i think it might be the no3 big end that feeds it. Point is the two are related, or possibly it was the failing big end bearing that starved the head of oil pressure causing the noisy tappets.

Have you checked the mains yet? Often a problem with the main takes out the corresponding big end.
From memory the head is fed off the main gallery from the filter that supplies the mains.
Mains are fine but I am replacing them too. Left the crank in for inspection and repair. The tappets started getting noisy after the first proper hard launch and run up the road. Then the noise cleared up after idling a while. Oil pressure and level were ok. Then I went to the track and as soon as things heated up I had the top end knock again. Then after a few laps the bottom end knock.
I don't think the first time I heard the tappet knock the bearing was damaged. If it was then oil pressure that I measure on the very gallery that feeds the head and no 3 would surely be reduced? No?

So all the other bearings are fine? Then i cant be oil starvation right?
Why do you have holes on the sump baffle? It wont keep the oil from going up the engine on acceleration. I just used a simple plate to prevent the oil going up and it also blocks the breather. It works very good I don't even use a oil return for my catch can.
One of the other big end bearings looks stressed but did not spin. My thinking is that it must be an oil issue as I had the tappet noise and the spun bearing.
The sump was bought like that. I think some holes are required to let sump return to the sump?
