all good advice on here i think. many levesl of build and quite often some parts are left off lists as they are expeced as already done deals. things like exhausts, mounts, oils.

my feeling is it can be done by not doing the whole motor so long as its a good motor already. i drove my S2 everyday when it was about. reliably. i dont feel the engine gets any better in reliability with a build if it was good to start with.

coils are subjective. lots of the newer audi coils fail and regularly. they are cheap though. My coils are original ones, from new. they still work faultlessly.
why replace a part that works?

crank has no issues when i put rods in. why remove it?

compression spot on? why hone and add cost and risk?

it cant be done cheap but it can be done cheaper by selecting the right bits and not just buying everything.

Gazza, excellent advice there. Inspect and only replace if needed, especially with the cost of new, genuine parts, and the variability of quality in new, aftermarket parts -you could easily end up making things worse after spending thousands on your engine. Not to mention making a mistake when you assemble could scrap the engine.

Funnily enough, Audi did kind of know what they were doing when they built our cars -hence mine is now rapidly approaching 190,000 miles and being daily driven.

Yes ARP main studs will squash the main tunnel by about 0.015mm. OK if you have enough clearance half a thou out of round is not major, but needs aling hone if you are running tighter end of OEM clearances. Stock main bolt are just bog standard HT bolts BTW.
