I won't be over your way until next weekend, but if your still stuck by then I'll gladly swap over ECU's to see if you get a spark to rule that out. I had a similar problem where It would intermittently cut-out, and then eventually no spark. VAG-COM threw out checksum errors, and also a faulty hall-sender code within the dizzy. Turns out it was a facked ECU.. they were like hen's teeth at the time - eventually I got one (paid through the nose), but it's been fine ever since.

All it takes is a minute dry joint or faulty surface mount component and the ECU is jiggered. Cheers the now.
Aye it would appear I have a red audi affliction eh? I think I saw you recently just after you'd passed. I've actually got a real thing for the emerald green. Started off as a thing for british racing green minis (proper minis - not stupid BMW hatchbacks).

so anyway... Cheers mate. that'd be fantastic if you get a chance and i haven't found another fault in the meantime. give the door a knock any time you're passing - even if you just fancy a brew. Up the driveway between the 2 cars.. says McAvennie on the door. As long as there's no danger of me killing your ECU that'd be great. I'm still convinced it's something else though since it only happened after my cable tidying and car washing afternoon.

right - i'm off to blink test the 16v. what's the odds i get 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42? Then i'll see a monkey drive past in an avant.. (god i'm childish. I'm giggling to myself at the mental picture of a chimp driving an S2 avant.)

With an S2 I doubt you'd ever have a reason to go to a lowly 16v mate. hehe.
I'll let you know how I get on. vagcom didn't work on it when Stevie (Dubdedup) tried it quickly once. Thought it might have been the laptop but have since heard it can be awkward. i'll try the simplicity of a good old LED and see how I go.

Oh yeah forgot to add that you should double check all the wiring in round the ignition switch and cure any bodge jobs done by the 'professional alarm installer'.

yeah I think that will most definitely be on the agenda. Failed with the 16v before I started because it only has 2x2 pin connectors in the fuse box - white and black. no blue so I couldn't even attempt the blink codes. doh!

got a handful of these in Maplins yesterday when I was getting LEDs. genius. Smart blade fuses that glow when they've popped. Think i'll replace all fuses in both cars with these http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?...=49003&doy=8m3

'fraid not mate. I connected the LED as in Paul's diagram on s2central but it lit up straight away before I turned the ignition so i must have had 12v. Tried it another way, as I saw on 20v.org I think it was... and got a dim, but lit, LED. I assume I had 2v across it there. Didn't want to mess about any more so I'm waiting for Stevie (Dubbedup) to call round with the vagcom to see if we have any joy. But he's concerned that it might not work with the age of car.
If the car didn't run as sweetly as it does I may have cracked up and broken it by now. But I wouldn't want to break an S2 if it can be avoided so i'll persevere.

Can't help but feel this one is something stupid... If it ran OK before you washed it... Suggest you check all the fuses. The blink codes are a ****** to work with on 3B espcially as the connectors are in the footwell.

No reason that VAGCOM won't work on your 3B. You should've sent your ECU to Paul to be tested. You'd have had it back by now. VAGCOM should get to the bottom of this, or as Paul says.. something stoopid, and you'll kick yourself..

That's my feeling too mate. Problem is I may be stupid and be overlooking something glaringly obvious. I have the panel off under the steering column and the old wiring for the aftermarket alarm has been removed now. Some of the existing wiring is iffy and there are a load of plugs hanging free that i'm sure should be attached to something. So access to the diagnostic plugs is ok... i'm just doing my nut wondering if one single wire was pulled when i originally fixed this panel up properly (cos it was sagging) at the same time I washed it.
Even the fact that it cut out as I turned left makes me wonder was something tugged (I wasn't going silly fast but i just accelerated up the street and turned to the left quite sharply)
                          My quest continues.....

I would have sent it straight away but the spark took it with him when he looked at the car and could only meet me to give it back on saturday morning. It was Saturday evening by the time I fitted it in again and stuck hall sensor connector back on and I wanted to nip down sunday with the vagcom but he was busy so i'm hoping he'll be down tonight. If I can't see anything else i'll be begging Paul to take a look for me, if nothing else just to tell me it's not the ECU.

I keep praying that i'll pop the bonnet and see a big comedy on/off switch that i've missed.

right - ended up ordering myself a cable and vagcom because i'll need it in the future for all my marriage testing purchases. and the results are....
