So it looks like someone (Peter) has fitted calipers with these part nos to the front?

What work is need to make a 30mm disk fit?

    Leigh
    Leigh,
I haven't fitted mine yet - hopefully next week. I'll check my part numbers tonight. To make 30mm discs fit you just have to grind down the pad locating pins by 1mm each side.

The rear brake conversion has been done but this gives too much braking effort to the rear. Could cause a spin on a greasy roundabout/ bend etc. The RS2 had Porsche Rear calipers but I feel it had more mods to the braking ( pressure regulator?)

Read bira.org for more details on Audi/Porsche brakes.

Don't forget the Porsche has a big lump of metal too far back and the S2 has a big lump of metal too far forward!

I've checked with the seller and he says that part nos 996.352.425 and 996.352.426 are rear calipers off the 996 GT3 and 996 Turbo.

So these should fit the front of an S2 and allow 30mm disks?

        It's all a bit confusing isn't it

Leigh, there is a whole selection of Porsche Calipers having all sorts of part numbers. they look the same but have different numbers.

Very simply there seem to be two sorts of calipers to look at.

They should all be Monoblock ( made out of one casting and not bolted together)

there is the 28mm disk variant ( as identified by AlistairC)
there is the 32mm disk variant.

I believe they both fit the same but the 32mm calipers mean the pads have to be replaced sooner.

28mm have to have the pins shortened as per Alistair's posting elsewhere on the forum.

Leigh - didn't get a chance to get down to the Porsche dealer this evening - but I have just had a look at the Porsche Parts catalogue.

The part numbers you are talking about do only show up on the 996t and GT3 cars and are indeed rear calipers.

They definately do use the same pads as my calipers as they were marked up on the packaging as such.

I think I have worked out why the part number is not the same as mine....... On the rear, they are mounted as leading calipers & so have the crossover pipes on the other end...... other than that I'd assume they were the same. (but you know what they say about assumptions!)

As Corey has said in the past, you should be able to adapt them.

They may be the same caliper ( apart from the tubes) The Boxter fronts are used on the rear of something else more powerful.

As long as the pistons and other dimensions are the same there is no problem.

Bloody hell I? I go away for a day or 2 and look what I miss!

the part numbers can be broken down,

                The 1st 3 identify chassis 996, 986 etc
The next three (not a 100% sure but) seem to identify front or rear?
                351 (front) 352 (rear)
next three are part specific, however it does identify left (odds) or right (evens).

The remaining numbers relate to colour. 01 (black) 11 (red) etc.

A quick guide to calipers and there applications

Boxster front (2.5/2.7) will suit a disc 25mm thick
Boxster S will suit a disc 28 - 30mm thick (if a 30mm disc is used you will need to machine the guide pins by 1mm)
Boxster S exactly the same as the front normal Boxster (but in red)
996 Carrera (same as Boxster S)
993tt (waste of time as it is 2 piece)
996tt Disc width 32mm, but I believe would accomodate upto 36mm thick
GT3 front (the Holy Grail) beautiful 6 pots
GT3 rear same as 996 Carrera fronts

                HTH's?

I have RS2 brakes front and rear on my "wannebe S2" Coupe Q (the next best thing ) I'm using the org. master cylinder (22.2mm) and org. pressure regulator. Pedal feel is excelent. Some pedal travel because of the small mastercyl, but OK. The brake balance is perfect On snow/ice the braking distance is much shorter with even braking on all wheels. It can be a little "twitchy" without ABS because the rears sometimes lock up before the fronts in slippery conditions, but very easy to control. With ABS : no problem

Not suffering from anyhting but a healthy looking bank account . I might get a really good deal on some 996 GT3 rear calipers which are basically the same as Boxter S fronts (I think) so I thought why not?

Might even go to bigger wheels cause I found some exact replicas of the Avus but in 17".

I have a link for a company that sells replica 18" S4 and S8 (like ours) Avus style wheels - Interested? 18s would look good on a silver avant
