Is there any reason why you shouldn't use Porsche 996 rear calipers as a brake upgrade on the front as there are a lot more rears available secondhand ?
Apparently the casting & mating face is the same as 996 fronts so the RS2 brackets / A8 disc set up should work & the only difference is the pistons are slightly smaller.
I'm sure that the rear calipers have a narrower section between the pistons or else people would be using them. Unless it's for a much smaller diameter disk?
I was trying to get another pair of front calipers today and was told the remaining pair is for the rear and won't be any use. this is fresh from the mouth of a Porsche racer/breaker.
It sounds like a 25mm disk may fit. ok for an Audi TT?
I picked up a s/h pair of 996 front calipers today so they'll hopefully be in place soon
While we were there Alistair C & I had a look at some rear calipers and the castings look exactly the same apart from the 4 cylindrical lugs which locate the pads being longer on the rears so reducing the available disc space. They wouldn't be big enough unless you could grind those lugs down.
They were £100 each although he tried to pull a fast one and charge me £125 each! Cheeky git. I managed to talk him round by buying a set of Pagid Fast Road pads aswell.
They did have another set of fronts there and while I was phoning round today http://www.porsch-apart.co.uk/ also said they had at least 1 pair for £100 each....
Originally posted by Alistair C nice place too! and trying to charge you another £50 for the privilege of looking at them first too..... that was nice!
Checked the price of my 'damping plates' too - mine were £22 for 4 from a Porsche dealer so all in all - not a bad deal - cleaned em up yet? !
If a (brembo) caliper is in the 'leading' position - i.e. ahead of the hub and i wanted to put it into the trailing position, how much of a nightmare am i creating for myself and what things would need to be changed apart from putting the left on the right side and vice versa?

David.
My new discs need a pair of calipers with GSOH for hugs and cuddles under the arches...

what do you mean by "damping plates"?
Ex S2 owner, now running around in an A4 Avant quattro...
dan - I don't know about the 968 calipers, but on the 996s, there is a small self adhesive piece of plastic which sticks to the back of the pads. Attached are two cylindrical lumps of metal which slot snugly into the pistons.
I guess they help align the pads and help to join them to the rest of the caliper to reduce resonance.
Not quite sure if the 968s use a variation on this theme but will have a look on the parts catalogue tonight if you like.... I presume you don't have anything stuck on the back of your pads then?
