I've been on a spending spree myself since new year - homefries, HID headlamps, 4 x tyres, heated seat kit, boost gauge, Blaupunkt MP3 head unit/CD changer on the way & now these Porsche brakes.

I've been thinking :wacked: - no jokes please

Is there an issue with using rear calipers on the front. The ones I am looking at have 2 different size pistons. Which is supposed to lead, the large or small?

Looking at the calipers Alistair pointed out on ebay

            http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...EBWA%3AIT&rd=1

It looks as though the small piston leads (presuming that the fluid crossover tube is on the rear of the caliper). Is this correct or should the large piston lead?

If the large piston sould lead would it mean swapping calipers left for right and then swapping the fluid crossovers to the other end of the caliper (to keep them at the rear)

AFAIK - the small piston leads. It's something to do with pad gassing. The trailing piston has to act on a pad surface that will have gas under it, so the bigger piston is used to provide a stronger braking effort to get through the gas?

Peter - off topic I know, but what boost gauge did you get? How long did it take you to fit it? Where did you locate it?

                  Dan,
I've gone for this Smiths one.

I ordered it 3 weeks ago from them direct as they're going to fit a black bezel for me but I'm still waiting for it as they're on backorder. I checked with Demon Tweeks & they're out of stock aswell.

The 996 front caliper is trailing on the Porsche, which is exactly the same as the S2 (haven't I already explained this???) the large piston needs to be at the top of the caliper as on the Porsche (so would be classed as trailing the smaller piston). If you are fitting these to a leading design then the large piston will end up on the bottom.
If you are using the rear caliper, and there is no real reason why you shouldn't if you are happy with it, I have used rear calipers in some conversions also, just make sure you have the large piston trailing.

DO NOT SWAP CALIPERS OVER FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. KEEP THEM ON THEIR ORIGINAL AXLE!!!

I have found another place that will strip and paint these calipers as per original spec, all for £75 + VAT and carriage. I have a set with them at the moment and I will comment on there return.

Corey thanks for the reply - I can be a bit thick sometimes!

Here is a pics of rear calipers off a 911 GT3. If I'm right they are fitted in a leading position on the rear of the Porsche.

Looking at the picture I'm presuming the top one is LH and the bottom is RH. This means I could fit calipers like these to the S2 keeping them on the same axle would mean the fluid crossovers would be at the top of the caliper as opposed to the bottom on the Porsche.

I could swap them round with the bleed nipples so the bleed nipples would be at the top and the crossovers at the bottom - yeah?

We can all go a bit Pete Tong at times.

For the nipple crossover swap (matron!), lay the calipers in front of you and remove the nipples (ouch!), now remove the left hand crossover pipe and put it where the nipples were on the right hand caliper, now remove the right hand crossover pipe and place it where the nipples were on the left hand caliper. Now replace the nipples where the crossover pipes once lived.

                        HTH's?

A word of caution, the crossover pipes are extremely tight and they can round off really easy, sit down when you ask for a price for replacement if you knacker one!
The method I use is to apply heat to the aluminium, the different materials expand at different rates and allow the crossover pipes to undo really easy.

Oh! and welcome to the world of Monoblock

After a long wait i've finally got my Porsche monoblocks fitted. I'll be bedding them in for a week so I haven't put them to the test yet. The pedal feels more responsive though & doesn't travel anywhere near as far . I'll see if I can take some better pic's at the weekend.

They squeal a bit at the moment when you come to rest. Did anybody else's when they were first fitted ? Anyway here's what it cost:

                            Porsche 996 front calipers (used) - £200 - Design 911
                            bespoke caliper brackets - £80 - martinjs
                            Audi A8 (Brembo) front discs 314x30mm - £58 - GSF
machine disc OD to 308mm - £15 - local engineering firm
                            Pagid Fast Road pads - £70 - Design 911
                            Porsche pad dampers - £21 - " "
Audi RS2 brake pipes (caliper to strut) - £11 - VAG Parts
bracket & caliper mounting bolts - foc - local hardware store

                            Total (inc. VAT) - £455

@martinjs You did a great job with those brackets m8
