    Just cleaned my injectors

I paid a visit to ASNU Ltd in Bushey (www.asnu.com) yesterday to get my 130k miles injectors ultrasonically cleaned whilst I waited. I am really pleased with the difference it has made, the engine runs smoother throught the range, the car seems sharper more responsive, and even seem to pull better in 2nd and 3rd and I expect to get improved MPG.

The guys at ASNU are great and let me watch the process and explained everything as we went along. I didn't realise when I booked in with them that they are the people who actually manufacture the diagnostic and cleaning kit, so they really know there stuff. I don't think they normally offer a cleaning service, but they seemed to with me.

First they do a spray pattern test: mine showed an uneven spray pattern with poor atomisation.

Then they did a flow test: we found each cylinder was getting a different amount of fuel, not by much, it varied between 97cc and 100cc going to different cylinders over a 30 sec cycle.

Poor spray patterns and atomisation and incorrect flow rates can lead to oil being washed off the cylinders resulting in greater cylinder wear, rough and uneven running, poor fuel consumption, low power, flat spots, poor starting, shortened life of the cats and lambda, high immisions and so on.

During the ultrasonic cleaning process that took about 30mins, the injectors are dipped in a biodegradable solution, apparantly chemicals can damage some of the internal parts, and are pulsed at different rates during the process. The amount of emulsified contaminents that comes out is amazing. A nasty white suldge which is a result of all those chemical addatives that are put in modern fuels and in my case a result of a lot of town driving. (They say that optimax runs cleanest). The deposits tends to stop the injectors from injecting the correct amount of fuel and Ironically rather than less fuel being pumped through it allows more fuel to go through, leading to rich running. This process will also clear any blockages as well.

Part of the service is to replace the filter basket within the injector, change the O rings as well as the plastic nozzle caps.

The "after" test showed very good spray patterns and even flow tests of 97.5cc being fed to each cylinder in a 30sec cycle. They also pulse the injectors at equivilant rates from 800rpm in stages upto 10,000rpm to check that they are behaving properly throught the range.

All in all a very good £75 spent, with good results and now that I have new coilpacks as well the car is running so smoothley, with a sharper and more responcive feel than I can ever remember.

No conection to ASNU, just a happy punter.

    Angus

Group buy S2 injector service ?!

Sounds interesting though - did they offer an opinion of the "over the shelf" injector cleaner fluids you can buy?

This is a very worthwhile job, I had a set of 8 done from my Range Rover and the difference was huge, much smoother and I got an improvement of 1mpg, which in the Range Rover paid for the cleaning in about a week!!!
If you can't do them by post as they advertise, give them a ring and they will tell you where the nearest machine is to you. Just google ASNU.

They were not too encouraging about "over the shelf" injector cleaner fluids. They said they can help with a badly clogged up injector to a certain extent as a short term fix, but it is very tricky to flush everything out as everything has to pass through the tiny spray holes and it can clog up even more. The ultrasonic way with pulsing injectors and the internal filter basket removed, allows the gunge to come out the way it came in, through the top. They also said that sometimes those cleaners can also leave their own deposits.

They said the best way to keep the injectors clean is to use Optimax, they can often tell which injectors are run on it by what comes out. They also said that supermarket petrol has an appalling amount of rubbish in it and again they can tell that a car has been run on it when they see the muck coming out of the injectors.

The problem with town driving is that apparently with all the stop and starts and the resulting heat sink along with the generally higher engine temps, it can make the petrol in the injectors evaporate leaving deposits behind.

I believe that the ECU takes about 80 miles to "learn" how to deal with the new flow rates of the clean injectors and to adjusts the running to optimum levels. So in theory the running of my car will get even better, we shall see. I hope this is the case as my MRC remap must have allowed for the slightly higher flow rates of the dirty injectors and with the new lower flow rates with the clean injectors it must be running slightly lean at the moment. Never the less it still feels better whatever the ecu is doing (Doug/Mihnea?)

                I don't know, give them a call.

This lot are in Hull and appear to do a fast turn around postal service at £11.75 inc VAT and return P&P per injector:

Always wanted this done but wouldn't send my injectors in the post to anyone.

Found a place in Cannock which is quite close to home so can get it done at my leisure.

I drove to asnu in my car, waited 30 minutes for it to cool down enough to get the injectors out and was on my way back home a few hours later.

How do you get less flow in the injectors after they have been cleaned? (100cc down to 97cc /30sec)
