I suspect that Ford (bless them) had to use the same sized turbo in the RS Cossie Escort for homologation reasons... And wisely decided to detune it for street/emissions purposes to make it legit... Then it gets a software upgrade by subsequent owners to hit 300bhp and more.

Not unlike what Audi & Porsche did with the S2 and RS2 - both cars have much more performance ability on tap at safe operating levels with a pure software upgrade (homefry/remap whatever) - but of course Audi wanted to be sure they could run starship mileage on these engines and minimise emissions so they played it very safe with tuning.

the GT28RS is available with K26 hot side and NO internal wastegate.
In fact you will get the internal waste gate only if you choose the T25 hot side.
      Same as for GT2871RS

      here you can check:

      Or here plug and play:

You're right! That was the whole mission for this car! But that was my point for there 227 bhp it is a bit of a worse case scenario: laggy without the top end to compensate. Audi did make that better for road going. But it does gives the Ford the edge in easy tuning...

Ok For what reason? Old technology? Unreliable? Too small for 350 bhp? Bad spool up?

Nope, quality of the casting is poor. DP has be moved couple of centimeters, hotside intake is much smaller than its ex mani counterpart, original bolts to mani can't be used due to lack of space.

Does the 2871 suffer from this too? Or are there maybe more interesting turbo's available for my 350 bhp / 500 Nm goal? Like the one KRB Trading is selling?

Yes it does. Turbine housing has sharp edges inside, but intake can be grinded to fit original or RS2 EM quite nicely. Still the K26 bolt pattern on Garrett turbine housing is causing trouble. Studs can't be used in all 4 corners but 2 have to be replaced by allen bolts.
I think it might be a T3 housing just drilled to different pattern. Intake is not round, but just machined a bit rounder leaving the edges. All this by ATP??

Bolt on? Well.. nearly. Probably quite bolt on to C chassis cars, but B chassis needs custom hoses for oil drain and water feed. BTDT.

I have never seen any turbo spool in this range (350 hk or more) spool as quickly as the GT2871RS, power comes on early (earlier than original turbo given the right setup) and is good for 400-450 hk. A very good turbo, though a few issues about the bolting on of the hotside. I think there are three different trim options, this was the smallest trim (48 trim) I believe.

Isn't it possible to grind and sand smoothly the K26 hotside inside with a dremel?

Yepp as usual porkkis is right, however I bought a porting tool for cast steel, so I just machined it down to look like stock , I used allen bolts before to my turbo so there was no big difference there, however I'm using the GT 35/40 Turbo, only took the K26 housing just because I'm to cheap to buy a new EM

Yes. I just used a porting tool for cast steel, easy and cheap, I put some paper inside the hotside, with oil on it so eventual bits of metal didn't go into the exhaust wheel.

Not much porting is needed, I think they use either T25 or T3 flange, and machine it alittle around the holes to make it a K26 compatible housing. Not sure about that though. As long as my car will run a 11.xx time I'm happy, otherwise NOS is the only way!

Does anybody have a dyno plot with that turbo on Audi 2.2t engine? Videos would be great also.

As this turbo is offered with KKK 0.62 and 0.82 hot side, which suits best for 2.2t? My logical thinking says that when smaller hot side is good enough for ca 380hp (at least), why should I choose bigger one? Anyway this turbo produces 350-400hp max.

                                Thanks,

                                Marko
