I feared I may have got them on wrong but there the original ones and can only go on one way as the supply and return fittings are different sizes on the bulkhead

That's a later car but has the tubular manifold on it. You should be able to pull fault codes from the ecu. The ecu won't run the injectors if something is wrong

i assume the 7a already supports a injector output test with vagcom or jumper cable, you can try that

                    I think it does.

I know you say you've done the timing, maybe worth re-checking?

I'm not sure how this ECU works in the case of dizzy timing being out -it may still spark but may not fire injectors.

it is possible to get the timing 180 deg out...

I've been here and done that when changing a distributor. All looked right at first time of checking but on turning it over with the crank bolt, it was clear something was out as after one full revolution it didnt line up anymore. The cam runs at half the crank speed so that is why after one full turn it can be 180 degree out, it needs another full turn to catch up.

                      Triple check all the marks:

Look through window in gearbox housing - there is a line and an '0' which should line up with or at least be half obscured by the gearbox window.
Notch in damper pulley lining up with mark on timing belt back plate.
Notch in camshaft pulley lining up with mark in cam cover
2 round marks on back of cam sprockets facing each other AND level with the top face of the cylinder head.
Distributor arm pointing at mark / small line in distributor body.
