Changing engine mount...

In case this one was aimed at me...
I fitted stock engine mounts Greg. I@m not sure how they compare to 034 items, I'm betting the latter are more robust and don't collapse as much over time. Although my old mounts 'looked' fine, they were actually about 10mm shorter! The clearance issue was solved somewhat - I still had some contact when cornering - I was planning to space the engine up another 5mm and see how that helped.AUDI - saving Dad's from minivans since 1994

Nor sure yet, I guess we'll see how the turbo fits in the Avant.
I may switch to 034 engine mounts, not sure yet, would like to see them side by side as well to see if they add a little more height. Otherwise yes, I'll put a spacer in and see how that does it. If there's still any contact I may have to get creative with a hammer - the contact area is just a panel, not integral to the chassis structure, so a bit of a dent in the right place should sort it out

OK, job done !!!
WHAT A DIFFERENCE !
I still can't believe how tight the whole transmission feels now. Gear selection is even more precise now and my annoying vibration when turning left has gone away completely.
On the down side, the engine vibrations are definetely felt whenever accelerating though it's on an acceptable level but when idling, the steering wheel gets the shakes and that's a bit annoying
But hey, I had been warned !
And I hardly am ever stuck in traffic so I'll just learn to live with it...
Regarding the job itself, we supported the engine and the rad side mount was off within 10min, very easy access and the bolts weren't very tight at all
. The new mount went in easily as well so we bolted it up not too tight using loctite and started on the turbo side, access not easy at all but thanx to a small enough air power tool and finding out blindly where to unscrew, we got it out within 20min...
Good job about Audi to have welded the mount base nuts to the motor support arm as they would've been a nightmare to put in IF the whole assembly was identical to the rad side where the mount base nuts are free from the motor support arm.
We then lowered the engine support and
the long 034 supplied bolt that is supposed to screw in from the top of the mount all the way to the threaded base of the mount base was TOO SHORT on the rad side and I broke off the first lip of the thread when trying to tighten the engine down onto the mount.... Strangely, the turbo side bolt was long enough so I can only presume that the motor support arm on the turbo side is "slimmer" than the support arm on the rad side.
Can't be sure coz we couldn't see it...
So, we took a longer bolt and rethreaded it so that we could use it and used the then redundant top nut normally used on the stock engine mount to use it as extra reinforcement once the tip of the bolt had lowered below the base of the mount and screwing it onto the excess length of thye bolt since I had broken the top lip of the thread.
We then tightened the 5 accessible bolts till 80NM torque and the hidden top one on the turbo side as hard as we could ( the wrench was much smaller than the torque wrench )
And last we readjusted the front engine mount and took the car for a spin ! :mischeif:
All together a 2 hour job so not bad...

I like the look of these. So I'll be trying a pair.

Anle what are these made out of and how much harsher are they compared to stock?
I would ask 4WD but he'll have installed them in approx 3 years time.

Well, I have not managet to get softer polyurethane, and now used here is rockhard.
But I have few installed here in Finland, one rs2 fellow mentioned that they can be heard only on idle, one other commented that they are loud after installation but few weeks after that reportet that they are fine, I asked did you get use to it or what? He thought that when he repaired his rough idle tinkerin with ignition this noice reduced also.
But they are HARD, they really are hard, and they are loud, but contrary to some other mounts, the whole weight of an engine is supportet 35mm thick and 70mm diameter chunk of polyurethane and there is other 20mm thick and 70mm diameter chunk on other side too to prevent noice in de-acceleration and enginebrake situations, so there is no metal-to-metal contacs and the vibrations should be minimal as the polyurethane is made for this kind of usage.Comment
