I don't have pictures of the pistons, but I will take some tonight - there are a few small craters - as if someone has had a hole punch on them.

You can feel the marks on the bores which I thought it meant it was bad.

I've not done anything to the cylinders - I think the picture has highlighted the honing marks - it isn't really that visible - it has had a new piston in it so that is shy it has been done before (before I owned it)

Give us a copy of your parts Greg - I'll see if I have missed anything off - thanks.

Yeah that would explain it, prob just the camera and light etc. It was just with the miles it has done the bores would be shinny and smooth by now, did not realise it had been honed before. hope the re-build goes well

        Doug, Nice job m8!

I know from recent experience just how heavy the S2 engine and gearbox are..especially when you're by yourself

Those bores look well scratched to me. Something has definately been through your motor. Apart from the scratches, the bores look like they were honed yesterday

Ah m8, those bores look shot. Time for rebore and some new pistons
Looks like it will need a bit more than a quick hone.

Here are some ugly pictures of the pistons - I have resigned myself to the fact that I will have to build my ultimate monster engine now - it will be cheaper in the long run - I hope!

THat one above is cylinder 1 that had the very low compression and never cam up, even with oil in the cylinder.

This is no. 5 piston and this was up at 14.5Bar all the time.

And this is a bad picture of the pitting damage on the cylinders. The car had been run with AMD RS2 chips.

I think at some point the turbo has gone through the intake - there was damage on the divider walls in the inlet ports of the head.

The only good thing about this (if there is any good thing),are the cylinders are still 81mm - I could only measure it with the verniers but at least they are not measuring 81.25or 82.50which are the standard rebore diameters.

The last picture indicates knocking. I think so. The others are more like classical seizing up. I think. Might be wrong too.

I'd check/change the knock sensors also if I were you.

I am hopefully going with Eurpoepc rods - if they are upto the power I want 550bhp, 800Nm - it has to be future proof I need to see how much ather rods are - Carrillos, Pauter - any others?

Probably JE pistons - need to see what the rebore is going to end up being before I can specify these. Hopefully get these specified so they lower the compression ratio down towards 8.7:1

Obviously new rings with these as well - there are some interesting nes with no splits - need to look into that though.

I'll change all the bearing shells.

Get the crank and lightened flywheel matched to the lighter pistons/rods.

Anything else I should be thinking about? I think that is about it.

I'm not worried about the knocking marks - the car has done 110,000 miles and has had a few different maps (not upto Mihneas standards), so I think they have caused the knocking. I might replace them anyway - real easy in this state.

I think you should be thinking about your wallet mate Seriously tho, i suppose you have to do it all now, no choice but to go monster spec, as you say at least its future proof.

what would have caused those wear/scuffing marks on the top edge of the pistons, looks like something was in there with them?

                            Mark.

Remains of a turbo at some point? Something has gone wrong in the past - it has one new piston and damage to that cylinders chamber in the head - maybe they didn't think the others were damaged enough to replace!

The pictures don't show the damage that well - I think it looks like bits of metal have been chipped off the edges of the pistons - I'll bring a couple to the next meet for some of the guys to look over.

Jubjub - I can't really afford this but it needs to be done - if there wasn't damage to the pistons and bores I would have lived with it - but not for long!
