    Turbo upgrades and chipping.

Out of curiosity what turbo upgrades and chips do the forum users put on their cars?

Who are the chip masters on the forum (there must be a couple there always is).

And how hard is it to bring a standard S2 to an RS2 spec?

Also if your modding which is better to use as a base?

    3B or ABY?

Sorry for so many questions but if i get bitten by the bug in the future don't want to buy the wrong engined S2!

    Re: Turbo upgrades and chipping.

    Jamo,

There are a range of bolt-on upgrades for the S2 that will take both the 3B and ABY engined S2s to well over the output of the RS2. It all depends on what sort of output you're looking for?

For starters, there's the chip upgrade. These will take a standard motor to about 270bhp/400Nm. The next easy upgrade would be bolt-on RS2 bits - RS2 turbo, exhaust manifold, intercooler etc. This will give you anything from 300bhp - 370bhp and up to 600Nm of torque with the right custom mapping (speak to Mihnea for this). Then there's the kkk26/27, which is another popular choice. This will produce a little more lag than the RS2 setup, but will also give you more top end. After that, you're into larger kkk turbos and hybrids like Mark H's TurboTechnics unit. This is good for 460bhp. However, with this type of upgrade you're into big money due to the requirements of a decent exhaust system from the head back and a better fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator. Then it just gets bigger and more expensive. You can go to 600bhp with the right bits and even more if money is no object!
The ABY is capable of higher outputs due to it's ignition system. The earlier 3B uses a distributor rather than individual coils for each cylinder, and this can limit what can be done with the mapping at higher outputs. Mind, saying that, I've heard of a couple of cars running up to 500bhp with the standard 3B ignition system.
Paul Nugent or Mihnea are the guys to speak to for info on what can be done in the mapping area. They can both be contacted through the forum.

If you do buy an S2 you wont regret it, and your bank manager will love you forever

ABY from what i have read is stronger and easier to mod i.e dont have to worry about rod bearing or ignition. but think it only applied if u go for big power.

PaulN (S2 Central. home fries chip) and Mihnea r the guy's for the chips on here.

S2 to RS2 spec aint that hard to do if u can find all the parts. Exhaust manifold, intercooler and turbo very hard to get. U can still buy new but pretty expensive.

once u do get 1 it is a slipper slope to power and empty bank balance.

I have home fries on now but trying to get all the bits for RS2. As is all the other S2 owners.

          Homefry n chips??

          Like it.

Nah wouldn't want to exceed 300-350

Is there an alternative to the RS2 turbo? also would the injectors need to be changed or base pressure rate raised slightly?

If this is the case then how does this affect the standard fuel pump?

All this and i haven't heard any mention of reprofiled cams!!

In summary, it's relatively cheap and straightforward to get to the 280bhp-ish stage, which makes a impressive improvement in car performance but past there it starts getting expensive!

Don't forget also that the S2 in stock form has, as is widely acknolwedeged, weak brakes, so if you start chucking extra power through it, you'll find very quickly that the braking system is not up to the job. Ok it'll stop you once, just about, but don't try it again!

There are as many different types of brake mod being played with here as there are members. It's all good fun!

I find it amusing that you've not even bought an S2 yet and you're already contemplating mods

LOL thanks mate, as i said i've nearly doubled the output of my current car and i dabble alot with my friends who have Renault 5's so i know alot about Turbo upgrading and various cam upgrades.

I'm running a cam with 285 duration and 12 mm lift it's pretty wild but my engine will go pop soon, need a charge cooler really.

I suppose i should continue hunting for a decent S2 first i suppose........ :wacked:

For 300-350bhp the RS2 turbo is your best bet. With the correct mapping you'll have very little lag and it will produce more torque than some of the larger units.
You can retain the standard injectors for this sort of output. They will be maxed out under load, but it shouldn't cause any problems. The 3B fuel pressure can be raised to 4bar by swapping it's fuel pressure regulator for the 7A unit. (20v non-turbo).
Standard cams are good for this sort of output. If you want a little more top end, you could also throw in the 7A cams. They give a little more lift and are being used by many as a very cheap alternative to RS2 cams.

My 3B/RS2 setup will take the car off the clock (on my private test track) I'd like to use a GPS unit to get an accurate readout of the top end. It's got to be in the region of 165 - 170 mph. Personally, I like lots of low down torque. Even though the gearbox isn't as fond of it!

Steve - is it straightforward to use the 7a cams with the 3B engine? Does it need a re-map after installing these cams to run properly? Did you get any adjustable vernier pulleys for those cams to set them up ?
Are they worthwhile on a standard S2 turbo on a stage 1 fry?

Sorry Jamo, I'm hijacking your thread a little, but these are all relevant questions for you too!

                      Lol dont worry mate.

If the 7a cam cam from a standard 20v engine then i cant see why you need a vernier pulley?

Has anybody got any tech spec on the cams?, this my area i love to dabble.

I would imagine with the higher overlap and higher lift you would need more fuel to avoid a lean mixture so some sort of remap would be in order?

Sorry Dan...I can't answer your question about the cams. I'm still using the std S2 items.

Tom stuck them in his motor a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps he can tell us if they have made any difference? I can imagine, they just let the engine breathe more easily at high rpm's.

I put a Piper cam in my old 80Sport and upped the fuel pressure and it opened up the top end absoloutely beautifully - from 4000 RPM and onwards past the old red line to 7000 it was lovely. Of course, that didn't have an ECU to play with!

                          I'll ask Tom.

Oh, btw. There are aftermarket cams available for the S2. Haven't ordered any yet, but I've been advised I can get a pair, with adjustable vernier wheels for a little over £500...bargain! Trouble is, they will need to be setup by someone who know's their stuff with valve timing.

The 7A cams (both of them) are a straight swap into the 3B, as both engines use the same pulley part #, not so easy with the ABY/ADU I dont think cos they both use different pulleys, but I will find out soon as I have 7A's to put in my new engine. Tom has just done this with no problems.

7A cam info here and here . Just as a matter of interest I think Marco points out that there is no overlap with the 7A's, (nearly though at 3 degrees seperation), but lift is significantly increased over standard.

                              Cheers,

                              Mark.

P.S. Tom I should have asked you for a llok at your spare 7A pulley on Tuesday , your Tractor must have made me forget .
