    Another one

Okay, now I am starting to get depressed. Someone I know who had their serpentine belt break on the road said I should add it.

    n. Serpentine Belt The AAN and ABY accessories, e.g. PS/PB pump, aircon, alternator, etc. are run off a serpentine belt. If the belt breaks, you have none of the above. If the broken belt doesn't take out the timing belt (it can and has), you can still drive the car (with some extra effort) but eventually the battery will go dead flat and you are done.

Solution: Pre-emptively replace the belt if the miles since the last replacement are high (e.g. 100K mi (160K km)) (A/C equipped, 054903137B,6 rib 21.36 X 1693MM or Non-A/C Serpentine belt (i.e. non-North American or A/C delete)= 054903137A, a 6 rib 21.36 X 1293MM) or carry one with you in your spares box. However, since the serpentine belt can take out the timing belt on its way out of the engine bay (killing the head), the pre-emptive solution is better. They aren't that expensive and take only a few minutes to change.

thanks for summing the horrors up.

#2, #4 failed on my S2, with ~130tkm on the odo.

replaced already many of the items on the list (replace #7 with Andy's aluminium version of the thing), fuel pump is on the shelf still. on the todo list are also T-piece and oil pressure sensor, ignition switch.

I had the cam position sensor fail after dropping someone off at the airport. got the car going again with the aid of the AA who applied starter aid into the intake, and when it ran for a few rounds, it continued to run normally

btw: cerpentine belt not present on my ABY, it has 3 separate belts for aircon, PAS, generator

Only horrors if you let yourself be a victim of them and fail to take pro-active, pre-emptive action against them (or at least carry the appropriate spares and tools to replace them when they do fail on the road).

I don't have an ABY near by to look. I have been given conflicting answers on the ABY having a serpentine belt (or not). My friend Kate tells me that the ABY has a 14.24 mm x 888 mm ribbed v-belt (like a serpentine belt), PN 034903137B. Maybe it is only driving a couple of things?

ABY/ADU has three belts, V for PAS and Aircon, ribbed for alternator. 7A/3B has a V belt for alternator too. I always carry a spare set in the boot, got me out of a jam a few times

I have had the serpentine belt break on the road and it was only 2 years old. You should add that it can break if the bearing for the viscous fan is worn out. It was my reason for breakage. On the S6, the bearing is cast in the bracket and usually they say you have to buy a whole new bracket with bearing to fix. Big bucks. The local shop had someone modify the bracket so only the bearing had to be replaced.

While the UrS4/early UrS6 viscous fan bearing is different than the later UrS6 viscous fan bearing, the later bearing is NOT cast into the bracket. It is PRESSED into the bracket as detailed here:

The VIN breakpoint on the two different styles = up to SN 030351 = old triangular bolt on style, after SN 030352 = round press-in style.

                    i'd like to add:

(yesterday) bottom intercooler hose blowing off! was on a hill surrounded by heavy traffic....grr!

mind you to be fair the hose was a silicone jobby bought off here and has a small (2cm) cut off the end.

it got me thinking, obviously this is human error so to speak but,id any large hoses blow off you grind to a hault....always carry spare jubille clips and screwdrivers

Although that is annoying, it shouldn't strand you and require a tow truck/recovery lorrie.

Spares I found in my in-car tool box.

Based on the list at the top of the thread, what am I missing (2 or 3 things, for sure):

car barely ticking over, raised the revvs loads of black smoke...managed to inch forward about a foot then the clutch started stinking

i can laugh about it now

I am not saying it is fun but that can be fixed at the side of the road with a few tools and duct tape (seriously). Enough to get you home (if you keep your foot out of it).

BTW, this is why going to Samco boost hoses is a wise investment.

the best thing to clean oily hands in if you have no washing facilities near by.
