Spring has no role here.Valve is pushed by piston to follower. If follower lets oil out valve gets unharmed.Specialy on valves perpendicular to piston the follower takes impact.Had 1.9 tdi with belt failure and after replacing one for testing it had compresion. But followers were damaged on the top.Comment

put the head on a table and check it with a straight edge for a start !! remove all valve check the lenght of each stem !! pick a valve and put in each seat and check distance from head to top of stem. measure heaight of all valve springs and note all measurement to each cylinder!! thats what id do and your 100% right in wondering what the fack happend, even go as far and weigh the valves, who knows what some one could of done.1991 S2 3B Coupe, KW v1, solid sub frames, poly bushed, chipped, about 260 ish

belt failure is not what happend here, its isolated failure . im not a pro engine builder but physics is physics , those valves did not get out of the pistons way in time, not all of them like a belt failur which tells me that it was over rev and they for some reason took a *****Spring has no role here.Valve is pushed by piston to follower. If follower lets oil out valve gets unharmed.Specialy on valves perpendicular to piston the follower takes impact.Had 1.9 tdi with belt failure and after replacing one for testing it had compresion. But followers were damaged on the top.1991 S2 3B Coupe, KW v1, solid sub frames, poly bushed, chipped, about 260 ish

sorry but why are people arguing. Arn't we all hear to help people. I know some people's views on what went wrong are different but thats people's views no need to get into arguements.
Much better to throw ideas out there and then everything can be looked at till the solution is found and this guy gets his answer.

If you are going to step into the arena, you must come well equipped with 'knowledge'...assumptions are all very well and good, but sadly diagnosing complex engine problems, is extremely difficult over the internet at the best of times - I made my diagnosis based a previous valve to pistons collision which was due to a rare camshaft keyway failure...somewhwere along the way there must have been a failure with the engine timing, whether that was due to the cambelt, crank pulley keyway, cam pulley keyway or another factor - time will inevitably reveal what has caused this failure.Comment

@Stocious:You are joking, right? You have a life and forum should be something technical, nothing more.
@Chazz:He knows some things, you should not take him this way.Stem high is important when grinding seats for proper follower functioning
So:
Ask again:Man had a problem why one valve is bent and one no at same piston. He knows what bent them.Or i got it wrong?Comment

OH MY GOD - PLEASE DONT GET NASTY, everyone has an opinion and on a forum they are all welcome.
A weird one i know and i expect all sorts of theorys.
I realy think the lifters could be part of this- the car had only been running 3 mins since sitting for years, but they had gone quiet (a detail i missed sorry)Comment

I'd say possibly missed gear = over rev and a couple of valves failed to get out of the way in time, If it was timing I would expect to see a lot more bent valves than just 2.
Stocious, remember, when a man points a finger there are three pointing back
