Car came with loads of history and bills for the regrind and parts for the rebuild, strangely the bill for the actual rebuild is missing It seemed such a good bet with only 4k miles since the rebuild I didn't look that hard and neither did the chap I bought it from who only owned it briefly..

Incidentally the crank never had it's final grind, you can see and feel the grooves in the journals with your fingernail, it looks like a turned surface not a ground journal at all.. The bill for the grind was from Agra Engineering http://www.autoinsider.co.uk/local/e.../ai_101968.php

The head looks like it's had bent valves running in it, the alloy around the valve pockets in two of the chambers is pushed up into a ridge which encroaches into the spark plug hole, this is so sharp that it would make a hot spot. Also one of the water ways has eroded into the clamping area of the gasket, this was obviously ignored when the head was skimmed..

Oil pressure has been excellent since I've had the car. I guess it was probably run out of oil before the rebuild. There's record of the engine being investigated for knocking in 2007, the receipt for the grind and bearings in early 2008 and the car has only done 4,000 miles since, no record of who actually did the rebuild.

Given my recent experience with a 15 year established "professional" engine machinist/rebuilder the owner at the time may have been an unwitting victim. The whole industry seems to be a minefileld, so many cowboys out there. It's a real shame

John I have the head that came of my doner car.
As for the pictures of your engine It must be caused by contamination from the so called rebuild. unless the crank was reground wrong size. Those pictures are much worse than both my engine failures, even when the second engine blew to pieces.

That's a fair mess of an engine! Feel very sorry for you having to sort it all out!

That really is a mess, feel sorry for you John. Whoever put it back together obviously didn't realise how important it is to get everything perfect to avoid future issues. Getting the mains/rods caps on in the wrong order is a disaster!
