Dissapointing lag

Little update gents, spoke to Craig at tdi turbos. He's not surprised with the poor response and lag I'm experiencing. He seems to think that the turbo is really too big for the 450hp range I'm aiming for. He doesn't rate the GTX line at all, and although they can produce very good power they sacrifice too much down the bottom end to be effective for on a street motor.

So I wasn't just talking trash.

Unless you (we) were to go to a variable geometry turbo, going to a turbo that is larger than stock (K24-7000) turbo and gives a better top end performance will always give you worse performance down low (lag, loss of torque, etc). This is true even when going from a stock 3B/AAN/ABY K24-7000 to an RS2 ADU K24-7200.

Yes 488bhp 647nm at 1.8 bar. Took AndyP around the block and the police turned up from memory...

Tuners are a very personel choice, you'll hear good and bad about all of them, some of the bad stories are just worse than the others

GTX3071R on stock cams should have full boost just before or at 4k in 3rd, not after 4.5k. A GT3076R makes full boost at 4.1-4.2 in 3rd.
If it's making full boost at 4.5k something is wrong with your car, end of.

what about asking to see if anyone can loan you a turbo to try before spending too much money?

do you know what power it was making? i know you say you set 1.5 bar on the boost controller, did it make 1.5 bar?

i am thinking along the lines of the wategate not sealing properly.

i would run it on the n75 until you are happy with it just to get rid of another variable.

However...lag is a real issue. Very little boost below 3k , and I don't think it's making full boost until well after 4k rpm. Mark wants me to change to a smaller turbo but iv gott be honest, I thought this setup would be ideal for a street car?

Any suggestions or similar experience?

Ive recently had my car mapped and am also disappointed with the lag using a GT3071R which should spool quicker than your GTX I believe. At 4K RPM Im seeing 15psi. Im putting it down to the hot side of the turbo as I had it opened out from .6 to circa .7 to give more top end. This is using an N75.

At 4k you should be seeing 30 psi. With a 0.63 hotside you should be seeing it at 3800 rpm.

Mapped plenty of cars with these turbos.

My old 3B with a GT3071R had to be mapped with slower boost ramp-up to prevent surge. It was crazy, trying to make full boost around 3500rpm if i recall. After mapping it was making it at 3800rpm and spooled up damn quick!

I need to stop thinking about it, car is off the road longer term now and it's tempting to start fettling with it

Above 3k the 3071 really starts to go for it, 2 Bar at 4k is right.

I would lose the 7A cam(s), swap out the turbo for GT3071R (0.63) for a target of 450bhp territory and desire for strong mid range torque (as opposed to max power up top).
