    S6 timing

Hi, does anyone know what ignition readings on vag-com on wot? Trying to determine if it's over retarded.

Do you know how much retardation is normal it full throttle? Maybe someone has a graph??

I told you - don't go full retard.

BUT seriously, at WOT, as long as there is not any pinking (pinging) detected by the knock sensors, the timing will be advanced (from zero) NOT retarded.

When the knock sensors get involved, the timing is pulled back in 3 deg increments until the pinging is eliminated.

Yes, sorry. That's me not being clear as usual. I means retarded from its base setting. What typical figures should I be expecting?

As posted already - http://www.s2central.net/vagcom_4.html For basic settings at idle - that is sufficient to check sanity of ECU wrt timing. The only meaningful way to compare advance settings with someone else is to run the same (stock) ECU across other cars at WOT and compare notes - there are lots of parameters which alter ignition advance - there isn't just one look up for throttle position @ rpm - if only live was that simple !

Not as a permanent fix, but more as a diagnostic tool, is it possible to use a resistor in one of the lines (in a lashed up link lead for eg) to, in effect, 'turn the sensitivity down' so to speak?

I tried another pair, connected but wrapped up in a cloth but as soon as the ecu hears NOTHING at all, it goes into limp!

Or, alternatively are there any other VAG sensors that are less sensitive?

Leave it alone, you're going to blow it up.
Knock is measured by delta coefficient, not by absolute value, making your resistors completely useless.

                        Not to mention:
                        a) You can not see timing pull in VCDS on M2.3.2
                        b) The reason your car runs like cr*p is because from what I read you have not pressure tested it in over 1 year, and just have thrown parts at it.

So. Pressure test your car, fix your leaks and thus prevent it from running 10.xx AFR, problem solved.

                          Right,,,,,,,,,,,

So how can I confirm definitely that they are sensing knock?

If you READ correctly I have also not driven it in over a year. I think it's covered 100 miles since its last pressure test at which time it was leak free. Next?

You can't. Not in any simple way. Either need a dyno, or my datalogging suite.
