Massive oil leak due to the oil pressure switch

Recently started losing a lot of oil, and left quite a trail behind me.

Thankfully I wasn't far from home when the oil warning light started showing, so managed to limp home.

After removing the coolant, radiator, fan, old air-con radiator, and plastic cowling I managed to get to the oil pressure switch - the source of the problem. Now getting the stuff I need to put everything back together. Also cleaning everything up - as it was quite a mess in the engine bay as you can see.

I did remove the oil pressure switch, and further oil started leaking. I quickly put it back, but wondered if there is much oil that will leak from here? I was thinking that there can't be too much - as its a higher point than the sump, but thought I would ask.

Mine did similar on way back from alignment, same day as its first MOT in 4 years(!)

Don;t think I stripped anything out, just got in there with a short spanner and swapped it out, and no, not much oil will leak at all, and you have a white one, you may be asked which you have at the motor factors, either white or blue are the options I think

While the engine is running, oil will leak from a damaged switch like that because it is under pressure. With the engine off, it will leak due to the oil draining down (somewhat) from the head.

This is a well known point of failure for many water-cooled VW and Audi engines. Always good to replace them before a long road trip, or at least carry a spare.

Sorry you are having problems Dan. At least its a fairly easy fix, apart from cleaning up the mess. It might be an idea to replace both the switch and the sender while your in there. Give me a call if you need any help.

Thanks for the replies - and offer of help Lou, I should be ok, but will drop you a line if things go wrong!

I stripped the coolant system out to give it an overhaul as well as getting near the faulty oil switch. I think I have a slight coolant leak aswell, so figured I might as well take the car off the road and tackle several jobs at once.

Got a new oil switch on order, aswell as coolant, and a new thermostat (which appeared to have been the original looking at the date stamped on it).

Loving the photo of that engine - mine is never going to look that good!

If you're looking at coolant I would defo put new O rings in the water inlet manifold cost about £10, 3 O rings and 1 triangular type thing

Ahh that old chesnut. Replace that bit of coolant hose from the thermostat while your in there as it doesn't look too healthy.

I have deleted the aux radiator recently, but thanks for the offer.

Yes - I did notice it looked a bit tired. Will look to get it changed whilst I can get at it.

Thanks, I will do that. When I get a minute I will take the hoses off so I can get the correct sizes.

The part number for that hose is N 0202621. Be aware that even Audi *might* send you the wrong hose. The correct hose is smooth on the outside. The incorrect hose is fuzzy on the outside. It fits but only lasts for a short time before becoming brittle and cracking/failing. Avoid. Only accept the correct hose.

Audi will probably want to sell you 1m or 5m when you only need a small length. Roose will sell you both small water hoses in this area for less than £15.
