My theory being there was good and even compression ,but my boost leak tester wouldn't hold any pressure whatsoever. Assuming the fault lay with the inlet I used the hand over the throttle body method, it's crude however quickly confirmed there was very little vacuum.

Once I have her finished I'll get some pics once cleaned up. I have changed the clutch master cylinder today, bled the brrakes. I need to adjust gear linkage as I can't find reverse, previously I couldn't find 1st. The exhaust sleeve at the rear isn't done up either. I've agreed to get the car so it drives and stops then I'll hand it back.
I desperately need a clutch fluid reservoir now though as the origins. Is full of cracks.

I spoke to he owner today, he's naturally over the moon. He stated that it's the first time the car has moved under its own steam for over 12 years. I just need to get it to start go and stop well and he will have it back to tidy up.
Frustratingly he did say he owns it with another and the other chap is talking about selling it on..... It seems the other guy reckons it's a £20k car. IMO it's nowhere near that but it's certainly worth more than the 5k they paid.

Is there a guide to setting up the gear linkage. It had been stuck on any old way forcing the lever too far left at rest. So you couldn't get 1st or 2nd. It now sits in neutral but as I say I now can't get reverse. I only spent 5 mins on it though.

Well done for getting it sorted.

There seems to be a lot of cars up for mega money, less seem to be selling for mega money

Gear shift alignment - Audi ur-quattro and many Type 44 quattros
            Gear stick checks:

            Engage 1st gear.
Press lever to left onto stop.
Hold lever with one finger and let it spring slowly back to the pressure point. Measured at the knob, the movement must be at least 5mm.
            Engage 5th gear.
            Press lever right onto stop.
Hold lever with one finger and let it spring slowly back to the pressure point. Measured at the knob, the movement must be at least 5mm.
If these movements are correct, the shift quality cannot be improved further by adjusting the linkage.

Adjustment (fine) - if the spring movement is not correct, the setting can be corrected by moving the stop sideways in the elongated holes. The movement should be roughly the same for first and fifth gears.

Stop to right - more movement in 5th gear.
Stop to left - more movement in 1st gear.

Adjustment (basic) - the basic setting should only be done when the fine adjustment is insufficient or after a repair that involved loosening the clamp.

            Gearbox in neutral.
Adjust setting rod to an angle between the axes of 30 degrees and a length between the axes of 134mm.
Push shift rod on ball housing.
            Fit adjusting rod.
Align centring holes in stop and gear lever base, tighten bolts.
Loosen clamp (underneath car) - connection must move freely.
Place gauge 3048 in position. Insert gauge pins in the vacant holes in stop pad on the right side first and then in the left hand holes of the stop pad.
            Check gearbox in neutral.
            Tighten clamp.
            Remove gauge.
Check and perform fine adjustment if necessary.
Select all gears. Check especially the reverse catch.
            Fit boot.
            Screw on gear knob.

IMPORTANT: Gear lever boot must contact gear lever knob

I've been doing a number of mechanical and electrical jobs on this car lately.
I'm very pleased to say she passed her mot today without any advisories. The suspension is sloppy and the 4 wheel alignment needs doing but she goes (quickly) stops ok etc. I'll be glad to watch this car drive away, but equally sad to see it go. A real love/hate relationship to say the least..

Yeah me too now, thankfully I have learned so much since then. I’m even running a VAG specialist garage now..?

I’d love to know if that car was ever properly finished. Looking at it now it was a good example
