I hv just replaced the dist cap and leads on mine and have followed the HT positions from this diagram https://www.justanswer.com/audi/3j2g...-wire-cap.html
I have assumed the two black dots at 11am and 5pm are the cap clip points - could you possibly tell me if this is how yours is now that you correctly identified the problem just so I can be sure as I have lots of spark and fuel but no firing and its the only thing I have touched. Thanks in advanceComment

On refitting the distributor cap is there anything to watch out for re the two small timing marks on the rim of the distributor ie the cap can only fit one way into its two slots but is there anything to be careful of re the tuna can alignment etc?Comment

I replied about this in your other threadhttps://www.justanswer.com/audi/3j2g...-wire-cap.html

Can’t find it, posted more briefly below..Last edited by newsh; 10 June 2024, 18:35.Comment

At TDC on cylinder one with zero mark in the bell housing window, the mark on the hall sensor “can” must line up exactly with the notch in the dizzy housing. This is essential for the engine to start. Turn the engine forwards onto the zero mark to take account for any backlash in the timing gear and dizzy drive.https://www.justanswer.com/audi/3j2g...-wire-cap.html

Thanks very much. I have not touched anything when I removed the dist cap ie the can or anything. I just removed the cap, the transparent cover, then the rotor arm then refitted the new arm and the cover and cap. It all started before I removed anything.

Worth checking though, if the timing has slipped, or the dizzy drive cog is worn or broken, the marks will be out and the car will not start.
The stock dizzy drive cog was plastic on some cars and would wear and eventually strip. There's a brass replacement available.
Checking static timing is essential in case of a non start.
Did the rotor arm come off easily or did you have to cut it off?Comment
