Look at it this way..
How much do you earn in a month? So why can't panel beater/painter which is a highly skilled job earn or charge similar?
Not far from me an Austin Healey specialists are charging £85000 for a full restoration.

Thats cheap, Had my Cq done 5 years ago to bare metal with Zinc undercoat and a few new panels and result was a bankrupting £5600...

i know a bloke now trying to get a respray on an audi 100 in red he said he was willing to pay 2000. i laughed at him then showed him just how nice an audi he could buy with that sort of money, He was shocked when i showed him an s4 .
but about five years ago i painted a golf mark 1, cost me about five weeks of my life and about 300 in paint. and a mark 2 also cost me the same. then i brought the s2 somebody crashed into me and well i paid 450 to get my bonnet and bumper painted and i thought at that price it would be ok but i know looking back i did a better job myself. but the time spent doing the painting the fumes etc well i just f ing hate it but it certainly is the most rewarding job when you get it right. ( i think painters are like barbers they have a shop but who knows what the result will be like.)

But TBH I've ended up with panels that look worse than before the work was done, and in most cases I could get a better result doing the job wih a rattle can. So be very careful. Even guys that have done a top job in the past can suddenly turn out crap work, BTDT.

Lol.. my labour cost is outrageous!! but seriously i paint mine myself for the reasons stated above. I'm never happy with what i get back when the work is carried out elsewhere.

Have been very happy with the results of mine, should also mention that 1500 of this was paid for by the insurance of a Peugeut driver who rammed into the side of the car 2 weeks before I took the car in for the bodywork to be done, Job was carried out between other work too in order to keep costs down and was a year in the body shop, mainly due to me insisting on genuine parts and some not being readily available. I also asked for a barrel of waxoyl to be sprayed in everywhere. Try to be very careful these days regards where I park though still managed to bang the bottom of the door on a plant pot last year leaving a gouge in the paintwork..Doh!
Ended up having a new bonnet, offside wing, sunroof panel, rear quarter panel, rear light panel, rear bumper and 4x Wheels refurbished. Thank goodness for agreed values!

Been thinking about this of late - seems a wide spread of prices depending on where you go and what the scope of work is. I'll have to get some local quotes.

Meanwhile, to the painters on the forum - what sort of time and material is involved for a 'glass out respray' - assuming all the graft of stripping the body and rubbing down is already done (except maybe a final stage by the pros before applying primer) ?

I don't need a bare metal restoration though a couple of patches will doubtless need attention, rezinced and such but they are very small.

I assume all paint is eco-friendly water-based stuff these days ?

a little relevent and still current story here on the pitfalls.

a mate has a s1 rs turbo. been restored all parts, bolts and all to as new. the body had new inner wings etc etc and looked the part ready for paint. he got a friend to do it for cheap money, bout 800 quid. it came back more battleship grey than diamond white. so he had words and called in a proper shop. 2k ythey said. took the car on trailer. on arrival the pain man said "its all out" he was very good obviously and saw the inner wing wasn't correct. in fact when measured 12mm out. on the jig it went and due to the newly welded panels when came off the jig it sprung back to same 12mm out. body shop said take it away, more time money. they didn't want the job after this.

its now with a third place to remove the inners fit new and re-panel straight. will be well ovber 2k finished.

we know of a very good body/paint man he could have used first time who isn't the cheapest but is very good. would have saved by doing things first time round.

moral of the story ofr me. unless avoidable dont have new paint and if you do have a proper job and look at previous work done by that body shop as a guide to the standard.

Yeah - thats the thing... you can't skrimp with some things. Just trying to get a feel of what is norm in terms of time and materials (paint, thinners & such) for a quality finish.

I won't be taking anybody onto it without seeing their work - the only two local guys I would have drove it straight to without worries (of getting ripped off or a bad job) are long since retired

This is why I ended up driving 100miles away to C&R Enterprises to get mine done after seeing his previous work at GTi inters. Also insisted it had to be to concours fit and finish which probably cost me a bit extra but it still looks excellent despite a few stone chips etc 6 years down the line... So worth paying more if keeping the car. The tubs of Waxoyl seem to be working too with still no sign of rust anywhere and hopefully it will stay that way for several more years (touch wood). Though avoiding rainy days and SORNing over Winter probably helps
