Another solution with that controller would be to use a transistor and relay driven by the display so when the recirc symbol is illuminated the relay closes and emulates the function of pin D9.

s2Central (remember him?) was confident he could rewrite the software in the controller to make D9 work. I even sent him the guts of the same controller you have there to experiment with for he went AWOL
Suffix H controllers are only for sale above £100 so want to sort it with this... If I can

Yes I saw that you had grafted the motor onto the side of the S2 box but you said it would not clear, I have looked at the photo and cant quite make out what it was fowling on or how much it needed to be able to clear...

What has happened to Paul anyway? He has not even logged on to here for over a year???

I'd be interested to hear from Paul too, we miss you!

The actuator fowled on the side of the car i.e. the space between the air box and the body is relay tight. In hind sight I think if you removed the front outer casing of the actuator and soldered the loom direct to the circuit board it may well fit.

If the H suffix controller is a no go I would look at the transistor/relay route, easy enough to do and very neat

I am not going to be beaten on this even of I have to massage the body shell with a hammer

Here is a few more pics just for notes for other folks....

This is looking from the rear of the heater box underneath the fresh air flap housing, if you remove the 2 clips which are the same as the clips that hold the heater centre section to the air con section

This is a photo from the passenger side end of the fresh air flap housing, remove a further 2 clips from here

There is another clip between the aircon and the fresh air flap once this is removed the fresh air assembly can be removed as one.

Here you see the s2 one on the left and the later one on the right

They are identical in size with exception of how much further the fresh air flap actuator sticks out

The S2 one is 7" wide

With the actuator it's 1" wider

Also maybe worth noting the later type motor is a direct fit replacement into the S2 box

So everything is just plug and play to the S2 Aircon unit as shown in the picture.

Anyone know what the orange connector is/was for? The wires have been cut so I guess it can go.

Rj scotty is there any soundproof against the side of the car in that area that can be removed?

          Orange connector is passat airbag.

Use the fan motor in the new housing as in my experience they are better than the s2/80's

It does not look like the fan housing will swap also as it appears to be part of the aircon box. From a good look at it though the design shape and dimensions all appear to be identical.

I did have a good look round the rest of the passat box and I think I have used as much as I possibly can.

sorry I meant this part. It should fit the earlier box fine, i've used a s2 one in an a4 and a passat before when i've been stuck getting the proper one, never was as good as the later fans.

There is sound proofing yes and I recall it was the with of the actuator that caused the problem, actually it was more the connector on the actuator that put me off.
I'm sure this could be overcome one way or another.

So it looks like you can use the a4/passat centre section, with the s2 evap housing, with the a4/passat fresh air housing (with mounts for electric recirc actuator) this gives loads of scope for donor parts

Not confirmed but, the centre section with the climate actuators attached appearers to reside in loads of vag stuff from that era. I looked under the dash of my t4 recently and the centre section appears identical to the s2/a4/passat item..........food for thought

That's it then this is the setup I think I am going to use. I will remove some sound proofing if required and may have to make a small impression with a ball peen hammer if anything further is needed...

I guess it's just a case of finding where I need to solder in the rest of the connections then on the car loom?

Don't be put off by the wiring, thats not difficult. With that loom you have the 70% of the connections are taken care of. Without counting the common wires (earths/12V) its about 20 connections and a re jig of the after run fan relay.

Interesting shot this, note the red arrows. That is the mount for the vacuum recirc flap actuator. Why dose this still appear long after vag went over to electric actuator?

                              Audi S2 RHD Digital Climate

                              Right another little instalment.

I ordered the little clips to hold the finisher trim to the front of the climate unit, they have now however been superceeded to a part that is not the same but can be adapted by drilling a hole through it.

The screws that were ordered are not the right size either, so I have fitted 2 x Land Rover spire clips that slot into position in the frame.

Then using 2 stainless screws it holds the retaining clips for the trim and holds the climate head unit into the frame...

Also I had a look at the space available in my car before anything is removed.
I managed to remove a piece of soundproof that was up the side of the heater box....

This then gave me what feels like enough room for the new setup to go in without any modification to the steel body shell

I can't get a tape measure in to check but my hand will physically fit up the side of the heater box...
