Spent a while in the car tonight... Gotta say there is indeed very little by way of sound insulation on the actual dashboard but there is a mighty hefty amount on the bulkhead itself.

To get it out cleanly you would need to remove all the heater gubbins and steering column too.

Another thing I discovered tonight is that my windscreen has been replaced before my time. It is definitely not leaking into the inside of the A-pillar as I removed that for a peek - and discovered the monkey what done it before broke all of the locating clips on both internal trims - they came out waay too easily but such is life.

Need to get brave enough later in the week to tackle the door seal... Hoping to find the root of the leak on the outside edge of the A-pillar - where it then finds it way past the tired old door deal.

I also couldn't see an obvious place to secure the cruise control module on the dashboard.

Spent some time documenting a heap of connectors and other boring trivia, but it will be important to someday one day I suppose.

I'll post a pic then... not at all easy to see where the CC module attaches to - there is just the flat back of the carbon trim - cannot see any lug to bolt/screw onto...

Honestly Gery - it is not as bad as it looks... if you've done the cluster a few times, maybe the steering wheel and centre console also - its only another handful of bolts after that to get the dash panel out.

                We'll soon be experts,

as we have five B4s, three of which each have a faulty heater matrix.

Have practised on one in the breakers and also with this guide the first one should be reasonable, but each one will be time consuming nonetheless.

My brother said that since he'd by passed his matrix, his non a/c Avant car was a lot cooler inside the passenger compartment, as there was no hot water in the matrix? He now wants to rig up a "H" shaped bypass system under the bonnet and switch it at the start and end of the summer?

FYI, Dealer price matrix €118, a German Car Autofactors over here €67 each- Valeo branded. (No discounts shown here, just RRP). All prices plus VAT.

Any thoughts on the Auradio??? (Not sure of the correct spelling) or Nissens brands?

While surfing, spotted these, may be of some assistance to someone at some stage - - http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-and-Re...100/A6/-S4/S6-)

                At your own risk.

                Kind regards.

A lot of the OEM stuff in the heater area is badged VALEO - dunno about the matrix itself though.

With the right tools immediately to hand - I'd say you could have the dash out in 30 mins unless something really nasty crops up along the way.

Would make a great challenge at any S2 gathering... Actually better extend to that to see who get it out, back in and all working the quickest

That's a good little guide Paul.

You don't need to remove the switches from the bank/rail. If you remove the 3 swivel vents first then remove the two bolts mount the centre console to the dash all you need to do is gently pull the centre console away from the dash to allow you to access the connector plugs from the rear.

Hadn't thought of that way, but I can see how that would work - as long as the two bottom screws of that central frame are out too. Your suggestion would be quicker !

Just another thought wrt Step 20 in my guide - obviously my carpet is out and I can easily access all three bolts on each side of that metal bracket. With carpet fitted it might only be possible to get at the upper ones - or am I mistaken ?

there is a flap in the carpet to give you access......but be careful not to drop the screws down bwtween the carpet and insulkation - BTDT. Bitch to get out again
