I've been having a lot of water in the Avant these last few days!

Just been reading this thread Clicky here

Alistair is saying there should be a drip tray which sits under the rear edge of the sunroof when its closed so the water runs to the sides and down the drains. Mine is not there or not visible! This is what has been bothering me, the water is coming in through the holes where the sunroof cables go but the water should not be on that side of the mechanism, if the drip tray is not in position that would explain it.
Has anyone got a pic of this drip tray and where its supposed to sit?

Using a mirror and a torch I don't think I have this drip tray at all The 2 sloping bars which it's supposed to be attached to are just hanging loose.

This is actually quite a breakthrough in S2 leak solving!

Do you mean the two metal strips that are screwed into place that run alongside the sunroof? they're sloped outwards and I have a sort-of tray that is supposed to direct the water towards the drain holes. Will try and take a pic later today to compare

No, tilt the sunroof up at the back and look backwards, there should be a narrow tray that sits just under the edge of the opening and goes from side to side. It travels back and forth when the sunroof slides. on my car this is missing (or its so far back inside the roof I can't see it..)

The water should not be able to get to the inside of the screwed on strips, it should stay on the outside and run round the tray and down the drains. The holes where the cables go through were never designed to be waterproof, you can see daylight through them.. I couldn't work out how it was getting on the inside so I was doing some forum searches and found AlistairE's comment.

I can see the drip tray on my old coupe roof so I'll take some pics in a bit and post them up.

This is my coupe roof, the one I replaced the glass roof with a metal one recently, in the first pic you can see the tray just inside the roof where its tilted up

Here the view from inside the car.

Here's the Avant, no tray, look at all the water sitting in the base of the sunroof cassette, no way this water can go down the drains..

Inside view shows the arm hanging down.

Here you can see the end of the arm, not connected to anything

Just checked mine, it has the drip tray thankfully, my main problem is lack of drainage hole on left front corner of the sunroof.

Also what are these peg things for at the sides? should they be attached to something? They move freely back and forth when I wind the roof backwards and forwards

I think the pegs hold the back of the liner.

Believe it or not... I think I have fixed mine today.

                      Few pics attached -

1049 - evidence of water dripping from overhead onto right bolster of drivers seat. Only actual incontinence would be more embarrassing !

1050 - I already have the upper door trim removed along with A-pillar and by teasing down the headliner you can feel the moisture. My drain tubes are perfect though.

1052 - the root cause is circled in red... tricky to see but that is a crack of daylight you can see with the sunroof open. It seems to either be a split in the tray that holds the tube - or its a gap that has developed between two parts of the tray. When water lands on the sunroof it runs past the outer seal as it should and finds this upper crack before the drain tube.

20 mins later with a bit of fiddling with black orrible gutter sealant and one very gooey little finger I have a repair. Its tricky pushing that stuff into the gap and the edges are sharp too but a couple of liters water directly onto the affected area showed no evidence of further ingress so hopefully I am good for now.

Have I had all the Coupe leaks now --->

1 - Tail light seal cords
                      2 - Bonnet pull grommet
3 - Door seal / triangle of doom
                      4 - Sunroof

                      ???

Congrats on achieving a dry audi at last S2Central, i've still a way to go on mine yet, need time off work and all the materials and a nice dry day to get mine done.

Found a big puddle of water in the rear right side well in the boot of my coup, opened up the tail light and whaddya know, its moist inside. Had exactly the same prob on my old BMW E30 in the same place. Something else to fix...

That Bilt Hamber gel stuff looks good, will order some shortly along with some POR15

The tail lights are easy compared to the door seal and sunroof palava. Good luck getting yours nice and dry. Never tried the Bilt Hamber products but POR15 is absolutely brilliant stuff.

What sealant would you guys reccomend to plug up any nasty holes I may find? I read somewhere about 3M 08509 sealant being quite good. This would be used to fix any leaky holes in the sunroof and my rear light cluster as well. There are plenty of Ebay but not sure which is the best product

Also if I understand correctly POR15 can be applied directly to a rusty surface? or is it advisable to remove rust or at least key the surface a bit first?

you need to wire brush off as much of the loose rust as you can then degrease it and apply POR15 Metal Ready which etches the surface and stabilises the corrosion.. otherwise you can use the Deox Gel to remove the rust all together then use the Metal Ready to etch the mare metal then two coats of POR15 followed by your topcoat of choice
